QUICK HITS
The Nittany Lions are fresh off a three-game B1G sweep on the road against the Illinois Fighting Illini, with PSU outscoring their opponents from the west by a 26-4 differential. It marked Penn State’s third Big Ten sweep of the year, helping steer the Nittany Lions beyond the 30-win threshold for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The Blue & White are in the midst of one of the most successful five-year stretches in program history, mustering the best five-year run of results at PSU since the program booked five consecutive 30-win seasons from 1999 to 2003. Penn State’s softball program continues to re-set expectations year-after-year, with the Nittany Lions shattering a pair of single-season offensive records on April 26 after besting the program’s runs scored record in the day before. The Nittany Lions are up to 355 runs scored in 2026, surpassing the previous program record of 341 set a season ago. Two additional records set by the 2025 team were improved on by the 2026 roster, with the program-best marks for runs batted in and home runs both falling in the series finale from Urbana. Penn State is now up to 315 RBI. The Blue & White also mashed three homers in the series finale against Illinois, with the second of the game from Hanik going in the book as Penn State’s single-season program record 75th home run of the campaign. Additional accolades came in for the Blue & White this week, with freshman third baseman Allison Oneacre and junior utility Brooke Klosowicz both adding individual player rankings to their resumes at their respective positions. Oneacre was ranked as the No. 6 third baseman in college softball, while Klosowicz came in at the No. 4 spot in the utility rankings from Softball America.
CHALLENGING THE CORNHUSKERS
Under the direction of head coach Rhonda Revelle, the Nebraska Cornhuskers enter this weekend’s Big Ten series as one of the nation’s most complete teams, carrying a 40-6 overall record and a dominant 20-1 mark in conference play. Nebraska has been elite on both sides of the ball, producing 332 runs and 80 home runs while limiting opponents to just 103 runs across 46 games. Offensively, Jordy Frahm has been the centerpiece of a potent lineup, hitting .423 with a team-high 17 home runs and 45 RBI while posting an .879 slugging percentage. Hannah Camenzind has complemented that production with a .408 average and a team-best 48 RBI, while Ava Kuszak has added significant power with 13 home runs and 45 RBI of her own. Jesse Farrell (14 home runs, 37 RBI) and Hannah Coor (.316, 40 runs scored) have provided further depth, while contributions from Lauren Camenzind (30 RBI) and Samantha Bland (.299) have helped round out a lineup that owns a .338 team batting average and .602 slugging percentage. In the circle, Nebraska has been equally impressive, posting a collective 1.94 ERA over more than 300 innings. Frahm has been a true two-way standout, going 15-4 with a 1.30 ERA and 174 strikeouts in 129.2 innings, while Alexis Jensen has anchored the staff with a 19-2 record, 2.57 ERA, and 174 strikeouts across 119.2 innings. Hannah Camenzind (1.40 ERA) and Kylee Magee have added depth to a staff that has limited opponents to a .209 batting average and just 29 home runs, solidifying Nebraska as one of the most balanced and dangerous teams in the conference.
STORY OF THE SERIES: NEBRASKA
One of the shortest active Big Ten Conference series on the books, Penn State and Nebraska get set for their 25th, 26th and 27th all-time meetings this weekend in Happy Valley. Nebraska boasts a 16-8 lead since the first contest in the 2004 season saw the Huskers pick up a 3-0 victory in neutral site action from Tallahassee, Florida. Penn State took the most recent regular season series during the 2024 campaign in Lincoln by a hard-fought 2-1 margin, securing the first Big Ten series victory over the Cornhuskers since the opposing program joined the conference in the 2012-13 academic year. PSU was previously 2-8 in Big Ten Conference regular season competition against Nebraska entering the 2024 weekend series in Lincoln. Nebraska gets set to make its first trip to University Park since the 2016 Big Ten Conference softball tournament. PSU toppled Nebraska in a hard-fought 8-7 contest from Nittany Lion Softball Park & Beard Field to earn a semifinal appearance against top-seeded Michigan. The last regular season meeting between Penn State and Nebraska from Nittany Lion Softball Park took place in the 2013 season, with the Blue & White taking one-of-three games against the Cornhuskers.
