UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's fencing team completed the split-squad competition weekend in North Carolina at the Miller Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina on Sunday, February 8.
NO. 9 JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY
In the first round of competition, Penn State took an 11-16 loss to No. 9 Johns Hopkins.
The women's foil team lost 6-3 against Johns Hopkins. Eden De La Cruz fenced 2-1 in the first round of competition with another win from Thea Fernandes.
Sophia Abashidze fenced 2-1 for the women's epee team in a 6-3 loss over Johns Hopkins. Freshman Yuna Tamura earned an additional win against the No. 9 ranked Blue Jays.
In a close 5-4 win over the Blue Jays, Eunyu Kim fenced undefeated in the first round of competition with a win each from Eve Scott and Mia Novick.
NO. 15 BOSTON COLLEGE
Penn State faced a 6-21 loss to the No. 15 ranked Boston College during the second round of the Miller Invitational.
For the women's foil team, Clarisse Tan and De La Cruz earned a victory each in a 7-2 loss to the Eagles.
Lena Gyenes earned a 2-1 performance against Boston College with another win from Tamura in a 6-3 loss in women's epee.
Scott earned the only victory for the Nittany Lions in an 8-1 loss in women's saber.
NO. 17 NOTRE DAME
During round 3 of the competition, Notre Dame took a 24-3 win over Penn State.
Tan and De La Cruz each won a bout in a 7-2 loss for the women's foil team.
Notre Dame took a 9-0 win over Penn State in women's epee.
Kim earned the only victory for the Nittany Lions in women's saber team in an 8-1 loss to the Fightin' Irish.
NO. 5 NEW YORK UNIVERSITY
The women's team lost a tightly contested match to No. 5 New York University, 14-13 during the fourth round of competition.
Both Fernandes and De La Cruz fenced undefeated for the women's foil team with another win from Tan in a 7-2 win over No. 5 NYU.
For the women's epee team, Tamura fenced 2-1 with additional wins from Allegra Cristofoletto and Abashidze in a close 5-4 loss.
Baker and Scott each earned one win against NYU for the women's saber team in a 7-2 loss.
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA
In the final round of the Miller Invitational, Penn State lost 21-6 to the University of North Carolina.
De La Cruz earned the only victory for the women's foil squad in an 8-1 loss to the Tar Heels.
For the women's epee team, Abashidze earned the only win in an 8-1 loss to UNC.
Kim fenced undefeated for the second time in the competition with another win from Emma Holmes in a close 5-4 loss for the women's saber team.
