Penn State sweeps series with Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Yost Ice Arena on the campus of the University of Michigan hasn’t been a particularly kind place to the Penn State Nittany Lions over the years.
Since the Nittany Lions had posted four victories in their history at the storied ice rink.
This year has proven much different as Penn State’s 5-2 victory on Saturday was its third win of the season at Michigan.
Senior Carson Dyck scored the eventual game-winning goal as the No. 15 and fifth-seeded Nittany Lions completed a two-game sweep of No. 11 and fourth-seeded Michigan in the Big Ten Conference ice hockey quarterfinals.
Penn State become the first road team to sweep – and just the fourth to win – a Big Ten quarterfinal series since the conference began its current postseason format for the 2017-18 season.
The sweep at Yost Ice Arena is the first-ever series sweep for the Nittany Lions, who secures their sixth 20-win season all-time and improves to 20-12-4.
The Wolverines ended their season at 18-15-3 overall with the loss.
Michigan opened the scoring taking advantage of a defensive zone miscue as Nick Moldenhauer intercepted a pass and burst down the slot beating Nittany Lion goaltender Arsenii Sergeev for a 1-0 edge at the 1:23 mark.
Penn State responded just 14 seconds later as Nic DeGraves converted a slick backdoor feed from Dylan Lugris.
The Nittany Lions grabbed their first lead of the game late in the opening period as Ben Schoen slipped a rebound into the net at the near post at the 18:07 mark after Reese Laubach’s initial chance was turned aside.
Penn State pushed the lead to 3-1 midway through the second stanza with a gritty fourth-line goal as Dyck scored off a beautiful centering pass from DeGraves at the 10:45 mark.
After the Wolverines cut the margin to 3-2, Penn State regained the two-goal lead late in the second period thanks to a goal by JJ Wiebusch at the 17:33 mark.
Charlie Cerrato then converted a late penalty shot at 17:07 of the third period to account for the 5-2 final.
Sergeev made 31 saves in the victory.
Penn State advances to face Ohio State in the semifinals Saturday, while Michigan State faces Notre Dame in single-elimination games.
