PSU hockey gets new threads for Wrigley Field
UNIVERSITY PARK – The Penn State men’s ice hockey team unveiled a new sweater ahead of the Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series at Wrigley Field on January 3, 2025. The Nittany Lions will battle the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a conference clash at the historic venue to open their second half slate, with puck drop slated for 8:30 p.m. EST in Chicago.
The sweaters are a nod to Wrigley Field’s main tenant, the Chicago Cubs, along with Penn State’s own baseball team, and feature subtle, baseball-themed touches with a Hockey Valley spin to embrace the history of one of the most iconic and storied teams and venues in Major League Baseball.
The navy jersey features an angled script “Nittany Lions” crest in tackle twill across the chest with front player numbering visible on the belly to mimic Penn State baseball’s alternate blue jerseys.
A white yoke is seen on the shoulders, paying homage to the 1950’s club hockey era at Penn State while a “Walking Lion” logo is present on each shoulder as a nod to the Cubs “Walking Bear” logo seen on the left sleeve of their jersey. Traditional collar laces with a ‘W’ behind as an additional tribute to the Cubs and their “Fly the W” win flag complete the front, while the inside of the collar features a baseball stitch hanger effect.
Thick, double stripes on the jersey sleeves and socks honor the 1979-80 Penn State Icers team while the arched namebars, lettering and numbers are exemplified in the Cubs jersey font with senior Simon Mack’s captain ‘C’ represented with the Cubs ‘C’. The numbers are oversized for better long-distance viewing in the outdoor environment while also featuring subtle, sublimated ivy leaves as a nod to the famous ivy present on the outfield walls at Wrigley Field.
The jerseys will be worn with navy helmets featuring a raised, script ‘Penn State’ sticker on each side along with the brown classic faux-leather gloves and pants shells from the throwback alternate uniforms.
