Lady Lions rout Monmouth
UNIVERSITY PARK — Like an early Thanksgiving dinner smorgasbord, the Penn State Lady Lions have feasted on the early-season portion of their schedule.
The Lady Lions won their first four outings by an average of nearly 30 points – all in the friendly confines of the Bryce Jordan Center. Sunday was no different as the Monmouth Hawks visited Penn State. Moriah Murray scored a game-high 23 points, including seven three-pointers, in 25 minutes, and Gracie Merkle added 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Lady Lions (5-0) rolled to a 100-55 non-league win.
Murray knocked down a pair of threes in the first quarter as the Nittany Lions raced to an 18-6 lead. Talayah Walker added five points, including a 3-for-3 effort from the foul line.
Penn State extended that margin to 47-26 at the half as Murray continued to have the hot hand from long distance. She drilled two more threes in scoring eight points in the frame. Markle hit all three of her shots for six points.
Jaye Haynes led the Hawks (0-5), members of the Coastal Athletic Association, with six points in the second quarter while Divine Dibula added five points.
The Lady Lions continued to pull away in the second half as Markle made 5-of-7 shots from field for 11 points. Murray added two more threes for six point.
Penn State cleared its bench in the fourth quarter and still outscored Monmouth, 28-17. Vitoria Santana paced the Lady Lions with eight points in the final stanza. Murray added her final three for her only points of the quarter. Walker ended the contest as the third Penn State player in double figures with 18 points to go with seven rebounds.
Damaris Rodriguez led the Hawks with 17 points, while Taisha Exanor added nine points. Exanor committed seven turnovers as the Hawks were pressured much of the afternoon. Monmouth had 28 turnovers overall in the contest.
The Lady Lions shot 52.7 percent from the field, making 39-of-74 attempts and held the Hawks to 36.7 percent, or 22 of 60. Penn State held a slim 40-39 margin in rebounding.
