NICEVILLE, FLA. -- No. 2 Penn State and No. 6 North Carolina State will wrestle for the championship of their respective pools after the first day of action Monday at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals at Raider Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Florida.
The Nittany Lions notched wins over No. 22 Northern Iowa, 29-9, and No. 9 Cornell, 21-16, to set up a Blue Pool showdown with No. 3 Arizona State at 8 p.m. The Sun Devils defeated Hofstra, 42-4, and No. 7 Virginia Tech, 23-13.
The Wolfpack posted wins over Binghamton, 35-7, and No. 10 Missouri, 19-12, to set up a Red Pool final with No. 1 Iowa at 6 p.m. Iowa blanked Central Michigan, 44-0, and licked Lehigh, 28-7.
Penn State won with relative ease against Northern Iowa, taking seven of 10 bouts with a 25-3 edge in takedowns.
The Nittany Lions had to rally late to repel the Big Red. Trailing 16-8 after 165 pounds, Penn State peeled off four straight wins to pull out the win. Carter Starocci had to ride his opponent the entire third period to eke out a 3-2 win. Aaron Brooks followed with a 15-3 major decision.
At 197, facing his former team, Max Dean needed a third-period takedown to win 4-2. Greg Kerkvliet clinched the win with a 5-0 win to close out the dual.
Penn State's dual with Arizona State has some historical implications, in addition to some intriguing matchups. The last time those two teams met, Nov. 22, 2019, the Sun Devils ended the Nittany Lions' 60-match win streak with a 19-18 win at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, Arizona.
Former Mifflin County standouts Hayden and Trent Hidlay went a combined 4-0 to help lead the Wolfpack to a pair of wins.
Hayden, who made the move up to 174 pounds this season, scored a 12-3 major decision against Binghamton and added a 9-5 decision against Missouri. Trent, an NCAA runner-up at 184 pounds a year ago, scored a pair of bonus-point wins. He rolled up a 19-4 technical fall against Binghamton and then tacked on a 13-5 major decision against Missouri.
N.C. State takes on an Iowa team that returns all 10 starters from a team that won the NCAA championship in March. That lineup is intact in the Collegiate Duals with the exception of 174-pound national runner-up Michael Kemerer.
