Fast start helps Hershey past IceHogs

ROSEMONT, Ill. — A fast start, a dominant middle frame and steady goaltending carried the Hershey Bears to a convincing 5-1 win over the Rockford IceHogs on Saturday night at BMO Center in American Hockey League action.

It was a road performance defined by special‒teams poise and balanced scoring. Hershey controlled the pace from the opening period and never allowed Rockford to generate sustained pressure, outshooting the IceHogs 35-26 and limiting them to a single goal early in the third period.

Brett Leason opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 10:02 of the first period, capitalizing on a Rockford turnover and giving the Bears an early spark. Hershey killed off multiple penalties in the opening frame and carried a 1-0 lead into intermission after outshooting Rockford 14-5.

The second period belonged entirely to Hershey. Matt Strome doubled the lead at 5:55, finishing a setup from Graeme Clarke. Strome struck again at 14:33, converting feeds from Alex Suzdalev and D.J. King to make it 3-0. Clarke capped the surge with a power‒play goal at 17:08, extending the advantage to 4-0 and earning first‒star honors for his two‒point night. The Bears’ forecheck and puck movement overwhelmed Rockford, which managed only nine shots in the period.

Rockford briefly cut into the deficit early in the third when Kevin Lombardi scored at 2:18, but Hershey answered quickly. Ilya Protas restored the four‒goal cushion just 89 seconds later, burying his 22nd of the season. From there, the Bears closed out the game with disciplined defensive play and strong goaltending. The final minutes featured several scrums and multiple misconducts, but the outcome was never in doubt.

Clay Stevenson turned aside 25 of 26 shots to earn the win, improving to 14‒11‒3. Hershey’s penalty kill went a perfect 5‒for‒5, while the power play finished 1‒for‒5. Leason, Clarke, and Strome were named the game’s three stars after combining for three goals and three assists.

Hershey outshot Rockford in all three periods and controlled the tempo throughout, a strong road showing as the Bears continue their push through the second half of the season.
