Fishing regulations lifted on York County lake

YORK — The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is alerting anglers that it has temporarily lifted all seasons, sizes and creel limits on Lake Williams, York County, in anticipation of the York Water Company’s plans to drain the lake and repair the dam. “We have temporarily lifted the regulations in order to reduce the number of fish in the lake in advance of a complete drawdown of the lake and a fish salvage,” said Kris Kuhn, Chief of the PFBC Division of Fisheries Management. “We want anglers to fish the water and make good use of as many fish as they can.” York Water ...

Successful night of fly fishing is always a good one

This week a friend and fellow fly fishing enthusiast stopped to pay me a visit at my office. He came to show me the new custom rod he recently picked up from a noted builder. After a short conversation about the rod while I put it together to give it a proper inspection, he asked if I had been out after trout yet this spring. I told him I had the kids out for mentored youth and the opener. While I had taken an absurd amount of trout out of my net during those two days, none were hooked by me. In fact, up to that point I had not attempted a solo cast. That amount of trout talk was ...

When the heat is on, this trick may just bag a gobbler

Hopefully, for their own good as well as their sanity, serious turkey hunters come to the realization sooner rather than later that just about all the tricks will work when trying to bag a bird, but not all of them work all of the time. While all veteran hunters know that more often than not that one big bird that has been scouted and coveted for months is likely to win most encounters. Hunters know that when the alarm clock goes off at 4:30 a.m.; know it when they slowly maneuver up a hillside that becomes steeper with each trip; and they know it as they prepare their setup in the ...

Doe allocation unchanged in local WMU

HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners gave final approval to hunting and trapping seasons and bag limits for the 2018-19 license year. Commissioners allocated 838,000 antlerless licenses for 2018-19, an increase of 34,000 from last year. The commissioners also set the number of antlerless deer licenses to be allocated, as well as the number of elk licenses to be allocated for the coming license year. Wildlife Management Units 4B and 4D, which encompass most of the local area, will have the same number: 26,000 in 4B and 34,000 in 4D. After hunters purchase a ...

Some seniors now exempt from pheasant permit

HARRISBURG — Any Pennsylvania hunter who held a senior lifetime hunting or combination license prior to May 13, 2017, will not need to purchase a pheasant permit to hunt pheasants in the 2018-19 license year. The pheasant permit was created last year as a way to help offset the costs of the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s pheasant propagation program. In its first year, the $26.90 permit was required for all adult and senior pheasant hunters, including senior lifetime license buyers. Adult pheasant hunters still will need to purchase the permit; junior pheasant hunters will need a ...

Lewistown’s rimfire event is state championships

LEWISTOWN — The Lewistown Pistol Club will be the host for the Rimfire Challenge 2018 Pennsylvania State Championships, which run August 17 to 19 at the club. Andrew Ewing, assistant match director of the state championships, is one of the main reasons the club is hosting them to begin with. It all started when the club began running rimfire challenges three years ago. “Lewistown has been running these rimfire challenge matches, about three years ago we ran one and last year we asked the Rimfire Challenge Shooting Association if we could rename the event the state championships. ...
