Champion archer: Practice, practice, practice

With bow season in full swing in most states and the transition to muzzleloader already happening in others, I took a moment to reach out to two dear friends with insurmountable experience in the archery world. First up, a mentor and hunting buddy Curtis Ashcraft. The second part of this two-part article will be a Q&A with Pennsylvania legend and Juniata County native Larry Wise. Curtis and I talked some hot archery topics for both new archers and archers of old. Discussing his credentials that seemed endless at times included an Indoor World championship, and an ASA Tru-ball ...

Dog trained to detect sewage

WILLIAMSPORT — Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Carol Parenzan uses many resources to aid her in patrolling the Susquehanna River watershed, but only one has a furry body and a nose that is being trained to sniff out the presence of raw sewage in the water. Little Susquehanna, or “Sussey” as Parenzan affectionately calls him, is 3 years old this month. He is a Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever, an unusual breed she chose for two reasons. “There are just a handful of dogs trained to do sewage, and he’s probably the only Nova Scotia duck toller right now being trained to do ...

The time is here for Hunters Sharing the Harvest

HARRISBURG — According to Hunters Sharing the Harvest executive director John Plowman, a lot of people and organizations share in the ongoing success of the organization To date, since the formation of HSH in 1991, the program has generated more than 1.3 million pounds of venison donations, and much of that is the result of the hunters and landowners who permit access. In 2017 the various deer seasons resulted in an all-time program record ...

Group brings vets together for adventure

OHIOPYLE (AP) — Enjoying life: it’s just one of the things they went to war to preserve. A group of veterans came together in October to seek adventure and savor the day as a unit by hitting the rapids of the Youghiogheny River at Ohiopyle State Park. One of those veterans, Gail Schnell, who is a U.S. Army veteran from the Washington, D.C., area, said she looked forward to the trip because getting together with other veterans is one of the things she really misses about the military. “Taking this adventure and sharing these stories is really a great experience,” said ...

‘Fish Detective’ praised for research

KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) — A Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks biologist who identified an innovative forensic sleuthing technique to investigate illegal fish introductions is having his research published in an international peer-reviewed scientific journal. Sam Bourret, a fisheries biologist based out of FWP’s Region 1 office in Kalispell, was the lead author of a manuscript titled, “Using forensic geochemistry via fish otoliths to investigate an illegal fish introduction.” If that sounds like a mouthful, consider it in terms of a piscatorial crime scene investigation involving ...

Expert tabs eight go-to baits for fall bass fishing

HAMBURG — Outrageous. Bombastic. Competitive. Those adjectives — and many more — can and are used to describe professional bass angler and television personality Mike “Ike” Iaconelli. When he appeared at Cabela’s Hamburg to present a series of seminars on bass fishing, however, he displayed another side of his personality. Iaconelli was cooperative, patient and outgoing when bass anglers of all skill levels approached him with their questions. Of the questions he fielded, the suggestions he provided that are most useful as October reaches its final days and November looms ...
