Community fights for ‘exceptional’ creek

PRIMM SPRINGS, Tenn. (AP) — Greg Deen and his family have farmed along Lick Creek in Middle Tennessee since shortly after the Civil War. The children of Vange Johnson’s large extended family were baptized in the creek. Bea and Neil Jobe, now in their 80s, no longer grow tobacco irrigated with creek water but still get their drinking water from a nearby well. Their Hickman County homes and farms lie just beyond Nashville’s sprawling bedroom communities, but the city’s rapid growth is starting to be felt here. In early January, a small sign appeared on the side of the highway ...

Seventh graders taking class to water was a stroke of genius

HILTON HEAD, S.C. (AP) — Taking dozens of seventh graders kayaking along Broad Creek wasn’t a dare. Maybe a challenge for some. And a test of patience for others. But leading swaths of life jacket-clad students — fueled with field trip exuberance and teenage wit — tandem kayaking out of Shelter Cove Marina was a typical spring day for Jean Fruh and Outside Foundation volunteers. And it’s one she wishes every Beaufort County student had. Started by two science teachers 20 years ago, Fruh, a lifelong educator and Outside Foundation executive director, built up the program ...

‘Ultimate showman’ of bass fishing, Ray Scott, dead at 88

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Ray Scott, a consummate promoter who helped launch professional bass angling and became a fishing buddy to presidents while popularizing the conservation practice of catching and releasing fish, has died. Scott died of natural causes at a rehabilitation center near Montgomery, said Jim Kientz, who worked for Scott for more than two decades. He was 88. A member of the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame, Scott founded the first professional bass fishing tournament in the late 1960s. Anglers could win money based on the weight of the fish they caught over several days ...

Rower plans solo trip from Virginia Beach to France

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Peter Harley has roughly 2.1 million oar strokes ahead of him. That amounts to 4,000 miles on the open ocean — or about 3-4 months of paddling the Atlantic. The 61-year-old South Africa native, who resides in Cary, North Carolina, embarked this month on a solo row from Virginia Beach to La Trinité Sur-Mer, France. “It’s only been ever attempted twice. Both unsuccessful,” Harley said of the route from Hampton Roads. “So an enormously difficult, huge challenge, and which I was very happy with.” Harley set off from the Dockside Seafood and ...
