PGC advises to leave wildlife alone

HARRISBURG — Whether in their backyards or high on a mountain, it’s almost certain Pennsylvanians will encounter young wildlife this time of year. While some young animals might appear to be abandoned, usually they are not. It’s likely their mothers are watching over them from somewhere nearby. So when encountering young wildlife, be it deer, birds, raccoons or other animals, the best thing you can do is leave it alone. “Well-intentioned people might step in to help a young animal that appears to be alone, not realizing its mother is nearby and it’s not in need of help,” ...

Community fights for ‘exceptional’ creek

PRIMM SPRINGS, Tenn. (AP) — Greg Deen and his family have farmed along Lick Creek in Middle Tennessee since shortly after the Civil War. The children of Vange Johnson’s large extended family were baptized in the creek. Bea and Neil Jobe, now in their 80s, no longer grow tobacco irrigated with creek water but still get their drinking water from a nearby well. Their Hickman County homes and farms lie just beyond Nashville’s sprawling bedroom communities, but the city’s rapid growth is starting to be felt here. In early January, a small sign appeared on the side of the highway ...

Seventh graders taking class to water was a stroke of genius

HILTON HEAD, S.C. (AP) — Taking dozens of seventh graders kayaking along Broad Creek wasn’t a dare. Maybe a challenge for some. And a test of patience for others. But leading swaths of life jacket-clad students — fueled with field trip exuberance and teenage wit — tandem kayaking out of Shelter Cove Marina was a typical spring day for Jean Fruh and Outside Foundation volunteers. And it’s one she wishes every Beaufort County student had. Started by two science teachers 20 years ago, Fruh, a lifelong educator and Outside Foundation executive director, built up the program ...
