UNIVERSITY PARK -- Visitors from Pennsylvania and surrounding states interested in the forest-products industry and the sustainable management of forest resources will gather at the 2023 Forest Products Equipment and Technology Exposition, June 9-10 at Penn State's Ag Progress Days site at Rock Springs.
Known as Timber 2023, the biennial trade exposition is aimed primarily at loggers, foresters, sawmill operators, value-added processors and forest landowners. The event is hosted by the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences and the Pennsylvania Forest Products Association. Parking and admission are free.
Nearly 100 indoor and outdoor exhibitors will participate in the event, complemented by a variety of live machinery demonstrations -- in the woods and on the grounds -- featuring logging skidders, chippers, horizontal grinders and wheeled loaders. Other demonstrations or displays will include sawmill equipment, mulching, chainsaw safety, firewood processing and lumberjacking.
The leading hardwood-producing state in the nation, Pennsylvania is home to more than 2,100 forest-products companies and more than 60,000 jobs, accounting for about one of every nine manufacturing jobs in the state. The industry generates nearly $12 billion in annual sales and has an approximately $39 billion a year impact on the state's economy.
Also among planned activities at Timber in 2023 :
-- Pennsylvania Sustainable Forestry Initiative training course, 1-4 p.m. Friday, June 9. This course will enable loggers to meet their annual PA SFI continuing education requirements. The course is free to attend, with a nominal administrative fee charged to those who wish to register for continuing education credit.
-- "Log a Load for Kids" charity truck parade, 11 a.m. Friday, June 9. "Log-a-Load for Kids" has raised millions of dollars nationally to help sick and injured children. Individuals and businesses in the Pennsylvania logging and forestry industries donate funds to help local Children's Miracle Network hospitals. Companies taking part in the parade have donated to the charity to participate.
-- Game of Logging Competition, Saturday, June 10. Professional loggers from the northeastern United States will compete in various events. Competitors are judged on speed, accuracy and how safely they operate their chainsaws.
-- Axe throwing, sponsored by Penn State Lumber Jacks and Jills, daily throughout the show. Attendees age 18 and older can learn about axe safety from Penn State's Woodsmen's Team.
-- Forests and Forestry Woods Tour, various times June 9-10. Visitors can tour the woodlot at the site to explore some of the issues and concerns facing Pennsylvania forest-land, such as forest pests, tree regeneration, watershed protection and wildfires.
-- Pasto Agricultural Museum. Located near the top of Main Street at the show site, the museum features machinery, tools and other artifacts dating from prior to the 1940s, including saws and other antique logging equipment. The museum will be open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. June 9 and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. June 10.
The Ag Progress Days site, at Penn State's Russell E. Larson Agricultural Research Center, is nine miles southwest of State College on Rte. 45. Timber 2023 hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. June 9 and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. June 10.
