Carlos Alcaraz tops Djokovic to repeat at Wimbledon

LONDON (AP) -- Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the Wimbledon men's final Sunday to collect his fourth Grand Slam title at age 21.
It was a rematch of last year's championship match on the grass of the All England Club, which Alcaraz won in five sets.
This one -- played in front of a Centre Court crowd that included Kate, the Princess of Wales, in a rare public appearance since announcing she has cancer -- was much easier for Alcaraz, at least until he stumbled while holding three match points as he served for the victory at 5-4 in the third set.
Still, Alcaraz regrouped and eventually picked up a second major trophy in a row after last month's triumph on the clay at the French Open.
The Spaniard won his first Slam title at the 2022 U.S. Open as a teenager, and no man ever has collected more Slam hardware before turning 22 than he has.
He improved to 4-0 in major finals.
The 37-year-old Djokovic, wearing a gray sleeve on his surgically repaired right knee, was denied in his bid for an eighth Wimbledon title and record 25th major overall. He tore his meniscus at Roland Garros on June 3 and had an operation in Paris two days later.
Less than six weeks later, Djokovic was hardly at his best on Sunday -- and Alcaraz certainly had something to do with that.
Alcaraz was up 5-4, 40-love in the third set when the occasion got the better of him. He frittered away his first championship point with a double-fault, beginning a run of five mistakes by him that donated points -- and that game -- to Djokovic. There was a backhand that went awry. A forehand volley. A forehand. Another forehand. That was the only time all match that Djokovic broke Alcaraz.
Krejcikova wins women's title: Barbora Krejcikova has won Wimbledon for her second Grand Slam title with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Jasmine Paolini in the final. Krejcikova is a 28-year-old from the Czech Republic who added Saturday's trophy to her championship at the French Open in 2021. She was unseeded in Paris back then and was only the 31st of 32 seeds at the All England Club after illness and a back injury this season limited her to a 7-9 record entering this tournament. Krejcikova is the eighth woman to leave Wimbledon as the champion in the past eight editions of the event. The seventh-seeded Paolini also was the runner-up at the French Open last month.
Patten and Heliovaara rally for men's doubles crown: Unseeded Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara have saved three match points in the second set before beating Australian duo Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson 6-7 (7), 7-6 (8), 7-6 (11-9) in the men's doubles final at Wimbledon for their first Grand Slam title. Heliovaara became the first Finnish man to win the Wimbledon doubles on Saturday. He sank to his knees in tears after he and Patten converted their second match point.
Siniakova and Townsend take women's doubles title: After seeing longtime doubles partner Barbora Krejcikova win the Wimbledon singles title, Katerina Siniakova went out on Centre Court and added another Grand Slam trophy to her own collection. Siniakova won her third women's doubles title at Wimbledon after teaming with Taylor Townsend to beat Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe 7-6, 7-6 on Saturday in a match that finished after 10:20 p.m. local time under floodlights. Siniakova has won seven major doubles titles together with Krejcikova and one with Coco Gauff at this year's French Open. This was her first with Townsend, an American whose previous best Grand Slam result in doubles was two runner-up finishes.
