Upper Dauphin too powerful for Indians

By KENNY VARNER 5 min read

MIFFLINTOWN -- After notching their first win of the season last week against Halifax, the Juniata football team looked to make it two-in-a-row welcoming in the 3-3 Upper Dauphin Trojans.

Despite a late scoring run by the Indians in the fourth, the Trojans were too much on this night, winning 28-13.

"They (Juniata) fight until the end, I just told them, I appreciate their effort, but we did shoot ourselves in the foot quite ahttps://www.lewistownsentinel.com/wordpress/wp-admin/post.php?post=952393&action=edit# bit there too," said Juniata coach Kurt Condo. "We had some nice drives there early in the game. And then next thing you know, that, we were backing up a little bit because of a false start or some type of penalty. So, you know, this group is developing, and I appreciate their effort and everything that they’ve done. So we just got to keep working, keep working."

With the Upper Dauphin offense starting things off, the Juniata defense was able to force a fumble at their own 47, to start the game.

Juniata moved the ball downfield on its first possession, going on an early drive that started on their own 47 but culminated on the 13, as they were stopped by the Upper Dauphin Defense.

After a penalty filled first quarter that neither team was able to pick up any points, the second started off quickly for the Trojans.

Starting out on their own 20 to start the second, the Upper Dauphin defense went to the air on 3-and-4 from their own 26. Quarterback Landen Osenga launched the ball to Eoghan Savage for a 48-yard pass reception, putting the Trojans on the Indians 26.

On second-and-9 from the 25, running back Chris McClain found his way around the outside and scored on a 25-yard TD run at 9:23 left in the half. The Upper Dauphin offense went for a 2-point conversion and were successful to take a 8-0 advantage.

Juniata moved the ball once again as quarterback Jason Condo found a wide open Bryson Sommers for a 63-yard hook up.

But unfortunately for the Indians the drive stalled at the Trojans 29.

With time winding down in the half, Upper Dauphin mounted a last minute drive downfield that culminated on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Osenga to Isaac Johnson as the buzzer sounded, with the two-point conversion, the Indians trailed 18-0 as the intermission got underway.

In the third quarter, the Trojans added to its lead as it gambled on a 4th down deep in their territory to get a first down on the 21-yard line.

Upper Dauphin's Dale Huhn broke a run for 79-yards for the team's third touchdown of the game. The Juniata defense stopped the 2-point conversion, making it a 22-0 ball game.

Early in the fourth, the Trojans added to their lead on a 3-yard TD run by McClain. Once again, the Juniata defense stopped the two-point conversion attempt.

But Juniata refused to go down without a fight.

After the Trojans touchdown, the Indians started their drive at their own 40. They would march down on a 10-play drive culminating in a touchdown pass from Jason Condo to receiver Josh Nace from 10-yards out for the touchdown.

The Indians weren't quite done yet, as they forced the Trojans to punt, getting the ball back at their own 40.

Seven plays later they were back in the endzone. Condo found to Quentin Houtz with 1:41 left, cutting it to 28-13.

The Indians special teams got in the act on the following kick off recovering the ball late on an Upper Dauphin fumble.

The Indians made it all the way from the Trojans 20 to the one yard line before being stopped by four straight defensive stances by Upper Dauphins' defense. With the ball on their own three, the Trojans took a knee and ran down the clock for the win.

Juniata travels to Newport next week.
