FIELD HOCKEY
Cougars rout Huskies, 9-1
LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County field hockey hosted the defending PIAA 2A state champs, falling 9-1 to Palmyra Tuesday evening.
The Cougars scored in the opening minutes and did not stop, opening a 6-1 lead after the first quarter. From there, however, the entire game was played differently. The Huskies played free and unburdened, playing the defending champs to a 3-1 scoreline in the final 45 minutes.
Senior captain Jayda Kanagy scored the second half goal, with the assist from her sister, freshman Jemma Kanagy. Jayda’s goal was her seventh on the season, and Jemma’s assist was her second. Senior captain Aubree Dobson added two defensive saves (13th of the season) and junior Taylor Kenepp added one of her own. Senior goalie Mya Felmlee was solid in the cage, saving 15 Cougar shots on goal.
The Huskies close out their Mid-Penn schedule on Tuesday, hosting the Polar Bears of Northern York at Marcal Paper Field.
JUNIOR HIGH
CROSS COUNTRY
Mifflin County junior high cross country teams battled in Wednesday’s meet with Juniata and Susquenita at Indian Valley Elementary Center.
Nine Husky runners scored personal bests under near perfect conditions. Kenneth Swartzell finished second in the race in 11:23, just off his PR time from last Saturday’s Gettysburg Invitational. Teammate Aiden Wible ran his fastest two-mile race, crossing the finish line fourth overall and breaking 12 minutes for the first time. Tanner Napikoski took fifth in a PR time of 12:39. Also scoring PR’s for Mifflin County were Sam Mills, cracking 14 minutes for the first time, along with Thomas Connors and Leo Stivala, who wound up with personal bests under 15 minutes. Nolan Wade had his best time in two seasons, finishing under 16 minutes. While Mifflin County fielded a full team of seven runners, Juniata and Susquenita each lacked the necessary five boys to score in the meet.
In the girls’ race, MC’s Lillen Adams placed second in a PR time of 13:16, and Adalyn Lutz came in fourth, also with a best time of 14:13. In addition, Hannah Russler broke 16 minutes for another Huskies’ PR. Brinley Foster was Mifflin County’s fourth scorer. The lack of a fifth runner contributed to Mifflin County coming up short against Susquenita, 22-39. Juniata had no competitors in the girls’ race.
Mifflin County will look to further improve in their final two meets of the season–next Wednesday at Penns Valley, and Oct. 24 at the Pa. Middle School Championships at Lock Haven University.
Juniata’s eighth grader Evan Yackey took control of the 1.95 mile race shortly after the gun fired and ran solo to the finish running a time of 10:58 for the win. Eighth grader Landon Miller wasn’t far behind sprinting the last 100 meters to move into 3rd place at the line with a time of 11:47. Eighth grader Mason Hardin placed 22nd with a time of 17:33. Juniata didn’t have enough runners to score in team competition. Other teams competing were Mifflin County and Susquenita, which also didn’t have enough runners to score in the team competition.
“What a beautiful fall day for a cross country meet. Maybe a little warm for racing, but we will take it. We might be low in numbers this year at the junior high level but Evan, Landon, and Mason represented well. Evan ran tough as nails like he always does. Landon is on fire. I knew he had talent from working with him last year, but he’s taking off huge chunks of time in his 2 mile races. I bumped up his mileage this year to get results so he would gain confidence and realize he has a future in this sport and it’s working. Mason is getting better and seems to be having fun in the process. I’m looking forward to having these three on the high school team next year, but I’m thankful I have more time to build their aerobic engine before high school,” Juniata coach Jeff Miller said.
