WINGATE — State College eliminated Mifflin County during the D6 Class 4A Championship on Thursday night, 2-1.
“We battled State College tonight, and our boys played them very hard and we are very proud of them. During the first half, we played aggressively with our deliveries of passes that created chances but went into half 0-0. In that first half, Zach Keller ripped a nice shot that just missed and Brayden Benfer had an outstretched leg off a ball from Jace that almost got us one in that half. Our defensive back line and center mid play (Chase, Brody, Mason, Drake, Callen, Jace) stepped and won a lot of balls by anticipating, that we then turned into creating opportunities going forward. Danny was ready, willing and able to come grab passes that made it through, and then he would start attacks with his punts,” Huskies assistant coach Todd R. Peters said.
State outshot MC, 7-4, in the contest. The Huskies had more saves, 5-3.
The Lions tallied more corners, 12-0.
“Zach Keller and his pressure caused some chaos in their back line and then he won the ball and drove it forward. He played the ball across the middle and RJ Miller finished it in a busy area about 9 minutes into the second half. We didn't change our mode of play because we thought we could continue pressure to get another. We gave up a penalty with 11 to go, no comment, but felt it wasn't heavy contact. Then, unfortunately, it felt like many calls didn't go our way,” Peters noted.
The Huskies finished the season with a record of 3-13-3. State moves to 13-4-2 with the district crown.
“We thank our seniors as this season ends. They have been a special part in contributing to success and progress with our program. They helped get us to playoffs for the first time in a long while last year. They also got us that first district win for our program this year to avenge the loss last year against Altoona. These seniors, and the other members of this squad did everything they could tonight to try the get win and we are proud to see that. We wish the seniors the best and we are eager for the next wave of players of all classes to continue the work to climb our ladder. Thank you, Mason Allen, Jace Bagrosky, Brayden Benfer, Kayden Hook, Zach Keller, RJ Miller, Chase Retherford, Dylan Rhodes, Jack Suydam, Brody Wolfkill,” Peters concluded.
