BOYS SOCCER

Huskies nudge Altoona, 2-0

LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County boys soccer dropped Altoona on Monday evening, 2-0.

Mifflin County assistant coach Todd R. Peters said, “This was a great and complete match played by our boys. Every player knew their job and did their job. Kolt Dixon got us on the board with 13 seconds left in the first half by testing their keeper (Krause) with a shot he couldn't handle. We encouraged being persistent at half with our play and in the places we were attacking. It was a physical match played by both teams. With 5:58 left in the second half, Brayden Benfer did some good work on the outside with the ball, by keeping a hanging defender off of him and getting into the inside of the defense, and then he found Zach Keller who hit a powerful fade-away shot low and away from the keeper to give us more breathing room. It was great to see our boys use some of the tactics within training and put it all together in 80 minutes of pure full effort and heart to get this win. Danny keeping the clean sheet, with the help of his defense, and every player being in good defensive help positions aided us in keeping the shutout.”

Each team had nine shots, Altoona had more corners, 6-4.

The Huskies (2-11-3) had more saves, 9-7.

In the final game of the season at Marcal Paper Field, the Huskies hosted the nationally ranked Boiling Springs. The Bubblers are a two-time defending PIAA state semifinalist.

The night opened with a strong JV battle, where the lone goal was scored by freshman Quinnie Williams in the second quarter. Despite a solid Bubblers push, sophomore goalie Carson Moore-Aldrich had 18 saves and the defense held strong, pitching their first shutout of the season and handling Boiling Springs their first and only JV loss.

The varsity game was back and forth from the get-go, and the opening half featured just one Bubblers goal.
