Boys place fifth overall, girls take sixth

GETTYSBURG -- The Mid-Penn Conference Cross Country Championships featured one of the state’s deepest fields Saturday, and Mifflin County proved it could run with the best.

Behind a pair of top-10 finishes from Hoyt Rodenbaugh and Wyatt Kauffman, the Huskies placed fifth in a 25-team field at Gettysburg.

State College continued its dominance, sweeping the top three individual spots and winning the team title with 28 points. Mifflin County finished fifth with 150 points, trailing only State College, Hershey, Lower Dauphin and Chambersburg.

Rodenbaugh paced the Huskies with a fourth-place finish in 15:55.8, while Kauffman crossed eighth in 16:08.5. Both runners earned medals, as did teammate Aidan Scavitti, who placed 32nd in 17:04.1.

Koy Aurand finished 43rd in 17:28.1, Craig Whitenight was 65th in 17:57.2, Camryn Treaster placed 79th in 18:17.6 and Logan Breneman rounded out the scoring pack in 81st with an 18:19.9.

“We had a much better day today, and that’s always nice when it comes to your conference championships,” Mifflin County coach Alex Monroe said. “It’s no secret the Mid Penn is incredibly tough, but we really held our own out there and I’m pleased with their efforts on the day. My standard is better than fifth, but we are headed back in the direction I was looking for following Paul Short.”

State College’s Luke Bradbury won the individual title in 14:59.6, followed by teammates Dexter Walker and Theo Oppermann.

Monroe was especially pleased with the effort of his top group and the depth throughout the lineup.

“My 1-2 punch, Hoyt Rodenbaugh and Wyatt Kauffman, positioned themselves the way I asked, and when the race got real they responded,” Monroe said. “Both of them are in great spots to punch their tickets in a few weeks. Aidan Scavitti and Koy Aurand returned to solid form following illness and Craig Whitenight is "Mr. Consistency." Finally, Cam Treaster found himself a well-deserved PR today, and Logan Breneman gave himself a chance early on to round out our top seven. I just can’t be upset with that.”

Husky girls place sixth in loaded field

GETTYSBURG -- The Mifflin County girls also delivered a strong performance, finishing sixth among 23 teams at the Mid-Penn Championships.

Led by three medal-winning performances, the Huskies raced their way into the upper tier of one of Pennsylvania’s toughest conferences.

Elissa Bell led Mifflin County with a 16th-place finish in 20:06.6. Espie Bargas followed in 29th at 20:22.9, while Libby Cook claimed 35th in 20:33.6 as all three earned medals.

Daliyah Bargas added a 45th-place finish in 21:04, Jovie Kauffman was 73rd in 21:34, Maddy Yoder placed 84th in 21:45 and Abby Anderson finished 115th in 23:07.

“The girls came ready to race and delivered a strong performance,” Mifflin County coach Kristin Kauffman said. “Their positive mindset and smart racing strategies paid off, with several runners recording season-best times. It was a great day.”

Kauffman praised the collective effort that helped the Huskies shine on the conference stage.

“With three medalists leading the way and contributions from every runner, the Huskies showcased their determination, teamwork and ability to rise to the challenge on the conference stage,” she said.

Mifflin County returns to action Thursday when it hosts Juniata and Newport.
