Montoya nets 5 as Juniata routs Southern Huntingdon, 12-0

MIFFLINTOWN -- The sun might have been out and it was a beautiful day for soccer, but it was raining goals for the Juniata Indians.
Sara Montoya notched five goals to go with two assists and Sylvia Brubaker added two goals and three assists as Juniata clobbered Southern Huntingdon 12-0 in non-league soccer action on Saturday.
"We had a lot of different girls scoring today, and really showing great support all across the field," Juniata coach Elle Shepps said. "We had girls playing different positions that they're not used to, so it was great to see them diligently working on the things we've been practicing all season."
The Indians scored six goals in each half. Rounding out the goal scorers were: Aubryn Deihl with one goal and one assist and Alexi Deppen, Estefani Cardenas Flores, Claire Ciarrochi and Star Barnhart, who each had one goal.
Olivia Mummah added two assists and Ciarrochi had one assist.
"As coaches, we were super proud not only of how they played, but just the enjoyment they showed for the game of soccer today," Shepps added. "I have to give Southern Huntingdon a shoutout because they continue to play with heart, and that's evident in the improvement they've made since we saw them last year."
Juniata improves to 4-8 and hosts Susquenita on Tuesday.
Mustangs blank EJ
MIDDLEBURG -- Ava Aitkins, Emery Peters and Carly Kreisher each scored goals as the Midd-West Mustangs blanked East Juniata 3-0 in non-conference action and improved to 11-0-1 on the season.
After a scoreless first half, Aitkins netted an unassisted goal in the second half. She then set up Peters, and Kreisher set the final with an unassisted tally. Midd-West outshot the Tigers (9-3) by a 9-6 margin and held a 5-1 advantage in corners. Addi Maust made six saves for Midd-West and McKenzie Hart had six for the Tigers.
East Juniata travels to Line Mountain on Tuesday for a battle between the Tri-Valley League's top two teams.
VOLLEYBALL
Huskies sweep Saint Joe's
LEWISTOWN -- The Mifflin County Huskies swept its match with visiting Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy, 3-0, in non-conference action. The scores were 25-17, 25-20 and 25-15.
Lily Curry had 27 assists and 17 digs to lead the Huskies, while Rylie Kahley and Grayce Napikoski added 12 and 10 digs. Offensively, Kate Hartzler and Napikoski each tallied 13 kills apiece with Napikoski adding five aces.
Mifflin County's JVs won its match by scores of 25-22 and 25-23.
The Huskies travel to Shippensburg today.
BOYS SOCCER
Juniata stomps Shik
SUNBURY -- Josue Osorio and Jackson Shellenberger each scored a pair of goals and Landon Beward and Alex Portzline each added two assists as the Juniata Indians topped Shikellamy, 5-0, in non-conference action.
The Indians (8-2) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first half as Portzline set up Osorio and Beward did the same for Shellenberger less than a minute apart. Beward fed Shellenberger again to cap the first-half scoring. In the second half, Osorio knocked in an unassisted goal and Portzline set up Dayton Miller for the final margin.
Juniata outshot Shikellamy 23-2 and led in corners 13-2. Nolan Imes made three saves to record the shutout.
The Indians host Hughesville today.
Tigers edge Southern Columbia
COCOLAMUS -- Two goals by Cruz Martin and another by Matteo LePape powered the East Juniata Tigers to a 4-3 non-league victory over visiting Southern Columbia.
The Tigers' other goal was credited as an own goal. Hudson Rickenbaugh had a pair of assists and Isaiah Galeas added one assist for East Juniata (2-9-1).
Goalie Jonny Hoffman stopped 15 shots. The Tigers host Millersburg on Tuesday.
CROSS COUNTRY
Juniata harriers race at Gettysburg
GETTYSBURG -- The Juniata varsity, junior varsity and junior high cross country teams took advantage of great fall weather at the Gettysburg Invitational.
The Indian varsity girls were led by Hannah Zeiders, who placed 83rd in a time of 21:51.8. Juliet Heidenreich was next, placing 129th in 23:12.9, followed by Moira Doydora in 137th place in 23:36.9 and Charlotte Barner in 159th in 24:46.1. Rounding out the squad were Marissa Henry, 168th in 25:35.5; Darcy Griffiths in 169th in 25:37.0; and Ella Zimmerman in 171th place in 25:37.9.
In the boys varsity race, Josiah Barner was Juniata's top finisher in 39th place in 17:19.0. He was followed by David Mayall-Marker in 71st place in 17:57.6. Rounding out the scoring for the Indians were Coy Kerstetter in 130th place in 18:43.5; Joel Harding in 132nd place in 18:46.0; and Elliott Miller in 194th place in 20:20.7.
Nicholi Keiter was the lone Indian to run in the JV boys race, and he placed 142nd in 22:48.7.
Finishing out the day was the junior high boys race, which saw Juniata's Evan Yackey receive a medal for his sixth place finish in 10:59.5. Landon Miller ran a personal best time placing 58th in 12:14.6, and Mason Hardin placed 298th in 17:18.4.
“The Gettysburg Invitational was a success," Juniata coach Jeff Miller said. "The weather was great and it showed because nearly the whole team ran personal-best times to date. Those who didn’t were not far off.”
