LEWISTOWN — Juniata boys soccer held off Bald Eagle for a 2-0 victory in a District 6 Class 2A quarterfinal showcase on Thursday night.
Jackson Shellenberger scored at the 38:30 mark in the second half to give Juniata a 1-0 advantage over the Eagles. Easton Berry had the assist.
"In the first half, we as a team didn’t think we played to our potential in the first half. I’m not quite sure what it was, if it was pregame jitters or what," said Juniata coach Jared Byler. "But once we got in at halftime, we made some adjustments . We told the guys what to change and in the second half, we played our potential. So, I was glad to see the boys respond and give a better effort in the second half than what they did in the first."
Shellenberger tacked on some much-needed insurance with a goal at the 37:11 mark in the final half.
"Jack’s a good player. He does a nice job for us, getting in behind defenders and creating goal scoring chances for himself. But both of those goals that he scored, if you watch, they came off of three, four passes before that," said Byler. "Both those goals were total team effort from our guys, keeping possession, keeping their foot on the gas, going forward, just two well-earned goals for us tonight."
Juniata (17-4) outshot BEA, 14-0. The Indians posted 12 corners in the win.
The Eagles (10-6-3) tallied 16 saves in the defeat.
Next, No. 3 Juniata plays No. 2 Central Cambria on Monday at 5 p.m. The ballgame will be at Central Cambria. The winner of the contest will face the Cambria Heights-Westmont winner in the district final next Thursday.
