Wrapping up a stellar year in Babe Ruth

By Ray Wilde 3 min read

LEWISTOWN -- All three Mifflin County Babe Ruth All-Star teams lost to teams that made it to the national final four. The 13-year-olds fell to Atlantic Shore, 15-0, in the Mid-Atlantic Regionals. Atlantic Shore was the second-place team in the nation. Hawaii won the 13-year-old national title, which was played in Jamestown, New York.

At the 14-year-old level, Broomall-Newtown was in the top three teams in Eagle Pass, Texas. Eagle Pass won the 14-year-old overall championship. Mifflin County lost to Broomall, 15-5, in the 14-year-old regionals.

Then in the 15-16-year-old bracket, Eagle Pass, Texas beat Mifflin County, 8-7, in the national finals. Eagle Pass then beat the team from China for the International Championship in Branson, Missouri.

I made a mistake in Broomall-Newtown's win total in the 14-year-old World Series. Broomall was 5-2 (not 4-2). That gave Broomall 27 wins (27-19) in World Series play. West End of Williamsport is the Pennsylvania leader with 28 wins (28-15). Mifflin County is third with a 26-14 record.

I also left out a name of one of the players in 2021 that made the all tournament team in the World Series at Eagle Pass. Texas. The four players that made the 15-year-old all-tournament team were Tucker Gill, Ryan Kanagy, Trevor Schaeffer and Xavier Smith. Mifflin County has a total of 25 players that made all tournament teams in seven World Series.

The Yetter family (of McVeytown) also left their mark on World Series play this past summer. Denny Yetter was the manager of the Mifflin County 15-16-year-old All-Star team that made it to the national finals. His son, Brian, was on the 13-year-old team in 2016 that won the national title and he also was on the 15-year-old team in 2018 that lost in the national finals. They were the first father and son team to make it to a different national Babe Ruth final from Mifflin County.

Other father and son teams to do it in the same year were Jaxon and Scott Pupo (father), 2018; Brycen and Dan Hassinger, 2018; Ryan and Jeff Kanagy, 2021; Trevor and Jake Scheaffer, 2021; Max and Bo Trawitz, 2026 and Jude and Travis Zook, 2026.

The three Mifflin County All-Star teams traveled 3,736 miles to four different sites this summer.

I traveled 3,304 miles and I want to thank all the drivers that took care of me. Denny Yetter, McVeytown; Josh Snook, Lewistown and John Tate, Belltown.

During my three trips I saw the cities of New Brunswick, New Jersey, and New York City, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Ohio, Indianapolis, Indiana and St. Louis , Missouri.

I also wanted to thank all the 13 families that were in Branson that took care of me on the two week stay in Missouri.

After 72 years of play here are some of the totals for the Mifflin County Babe Ruth League.

On the Pennsylvania level, Mifflin County is still the leader in state titles won, 25; state runners-up, 28; state championship games, 53 and state final four's. 90.

In the Mid-Atlantic Regional and national levels, Mifflin County has won seven regional titles and been regional runner-up nine times.

All seven of the Mifflin County World Series teams have placed in the top seven in the country and four made it to the top six. One team won the national title and three were national finalists.

And the 2026 15-16-year-old team had to play on the International stage (the first for Mifflin County) and finished third.

Mifflin County needs just five more wins to become the first league in Pennsylvania to win 800 games. MIfflin County's record going into the 2027 season is 795-374.
