Roundups: Huskies fall to Mustangs in season opener, 7-1

LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County field hockey opened its regular season on Tuesday at Marcal Paper Field against West Perry. However, the visiting Mustangs (2-1) spoiled the outing with a 7-1 victory.
The varsity game started earlier due to potential weather, the experience of having two games under their belt showed for the Mustangs of West Perry, opening the first quarter with an early goal from Lexi McKeehan. The Mustangs added two more before the half as the heat took its toll on both teams.
The Huskies found the back of the cage thanks to returning All-Conference forward Jayda Kanagy, but the damage was already done as the significant depth advantage of Mustangs prevailed.
First-year starter and senior goalie Mya Felmlee corralled 19 saves for the Huskies.
West Perry also won the JV game, 5-0 as sophomore goalie Carson Moore-Aldich made 10 saves in her debut game in the cage.
Next, the Huskies travel to the top 20 nationally ranked Palmyra Cougars on Thursday for their first Mid-Penn matchup.

Huskies place 6th at Valley Green
ETTERS — Mifflin County golf competed Wednesday at Valley Green golf course, the home of Red Land. MC finished sixth on the day, beating Milton Hershey, and losing to Palmyra, Mechanicsburg, Cedar Cliff, Bishop McDevitt, and Red Land.
The Huskies were led by Evan Breon, who shot a 78 to tie for 10th place overall. Chase Krepps fired a career-low 83, and Jude Zook also added an 83, which was a season low. Caleb Bubb rounded out the scoring with an 84.
The Huskies now stand at 9-29 on the season. Despite finishing sixth place, MC shot a season-low score 328, which is also the third-lowest score for the MC golf team over the past 11 seasons.
The Huskies are back in action today at Lewistown Country Club against Bellefonte.
MC girls golfers Emma Norman and Hannah Moist also were in action at Hershey Country Club. Unfortunately Mother Nature had other plans. Both girls played one hole before the rain ended the round. Both Emma and Hannah are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Mayapple golf course.

Mustangs draw with Danville
MIDDLEBURG — During Wednesday’s PHAC showdown in girls soccer action, Midd-West and Danville came to a draw, 0-0.
Midd-West outshot Danville, 10-9, but each team recorded three corners.
In the saves department, Mustang goalie Addie Maust had nine saves and Danville’s Maddie Harris had 10.
Midd-West goes to 1-0-1 (0-0-1 PHAC) and Danville is also 1-0-1 (0-0-1).

Juniata Christian opens new field with a 6-2 victory
MCALISTERVILLE -- Reigning NCSAA Boys' Varsity Soccer Small-School National Player of the Year Julian Flores de Valgaz scored all six goals as Juniata Christian School opened its new soccer field with a 6-2 victory over Northumberland Christian on Tuesday.
The win handed Northumberland Christian its first loss in Allegheny Christian Athletic Conference-Eastern Division play since 2021.
Jordan Lara added three assists for Juniata Christian, which improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
"What a fantastic way to inaugurate our new soccer field," Juniata Christian coach Jorge Vargas de Valgaz said. "The boys delivered an outstanding performance and earned a decisive 6-2 victory."
Flores de Valgaz, who was named the NCSAA national player of the year following the 2025 season, scored 45 goals with 19 assists last season.
Northumberland Christian fell to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Liam Zwatt and James Conner scored second-half goals for the Warriors, with Jackson Shaffer assisting on both.
GIRLS SOCCER
Norry tops Lions, 3-1
Norry Christian defeated Juniata Christian in girls soccer on Tuesday, 3-1.
The lone first-half goal came from Josie Sieber of JCS and it was assisted by Aurora Weller.
Second-half goals came from Norry’s Emm Conner, Ameilia Spade and Sarah Cantne.
Norry outshot JCS, 20-9.
Emma Martin of JCS tallied 10 saves as Norry had three.
As for corner kicks, Norry had six and JCS mustered three.
JCS drops to 1-2 on the year.
The Lions next game is Sept. 14 at Columbia County.
CROSS COUNTRY
Indians have strong XC showing
COCOLAMUS — Juniata High School and Junior High cross country teams opened the season with a home meet at East Juniata High School on Tuesday. Both high school teams won against all opponents.
The night started off recognizing the members for both the junior high and high school teams and honoring their seniors Joel Hardin and Coy Kerstetter.
The first race was the high school girls. Leading the way for the Indians was junior Carolyn Heidenreich and she placed second overall with a time of 23.15. Freshman Hannah Wirt came in next with a time of 25:11 and a fourth-place finish. Junior Hannah Zeiders placed fifth with a time of 25:48. Freshman Juliet Heidenreich finished with a time of 26:36 good enough for sixth overall. Rounding out the scoring for the Indians was junior Erendira Martinez-Ramirez finishing in 10th place with a time of 31:14. Other Juniata High School girl runners competing were:

Juniata head coach Jeff Miller said, “It was extremely hot today for a cross country race. The majority of the girls struggled with the heat. For many, it was their first high school cross country race and they can learn from tonight to improve for the next race. I was impressed how Carolyn handled the heat and still ran a solid race. Hopefully it will be much better conditions this Saturday at the Big Valley Invitational in Reedsville.”

The second race of the day was the high school boys competing on the spectator friendly 5k course. Leading the way for the boys was Junior Josiah Barner winning the race with a time of 19:51. Shortly after was junior David Mayall-Marker took second overall with a time of 20:31. Senior Coy Kerstetter was next running a time of 22:12 for 4th place. Senior Joel Harding finished a fraction behind coy with a time of 22:12 for fifth place. Rounding out the scoring for the Indians was freshman Matthew Corman in sixth place with a time of 22:36. Other Juniata High School boy runners competing were:

“I thought the boys ran well in the heat. It’s good to see Josiah back to racing after a serious injury during the track season. He’s hungrier than ever for success so I expect him to do everything in his power to bring out his true potential with the time he has in high school yet. The boys team is very talented and they will all improve as the season goes on. We just need to keep doing all the little things,” coach Jeff Miller said.

Halifax, St Joe’s, and Upper Dauphin did not have enough runners to score as a team.
The last race of the evening was the junior high boys and girls combined 2 mile race. Juniata eighth grader Evan Yackey won the race with a time of 12:16. Eighth grader Landon Miller placed 2nd overall with a time of 14:18. Eighth grader Mason Hardin placed 5th overall with a time of 19:43.
“I had the 3 boys run the first mile and last half mile hard in preparation for Saturday’s Big Valley Invitational. They all did great. I had little doubt Evan would be phased by the heat. He’s one of the toughest eighth graders I’ve worked with. He’s got all the tools to go far in this sport. Landon is a huge talent that is just getting started. I don’t think he realizes just how good he can get. Mason was my most reliable runner over the summer and I expect him to learn from each race so he can run a time on a cool day at the end of the season to show all his hard work paying off,” Junior High coach Miller noted.
There were not enough runners to score as a team for any of the junior high teams.
Midd-West girls sweep during XC meet
Midd-West cross country battled with Warrior Run Defenders, Montoursville Warriors and Hughesville Spartans on Tuesday afternoon.
Midd-West girls earned a sweep and Midd-West boys picked up two wins.
On the girls side, Midd-West beat Hughesville, 25-36, and the Mustangs defeated the Warriors, 16-46. Midd-West toppled Warrior Run, 15-50.
Hughesville won against the Warriors, 25-30. The Spartans beat the Defenders, 18-37, and the Warriors beat the Defenders, 19-36.
Hughesville’s Emelia Wolfe placed first at 20:54.6. Mustangs’ Evelyn Welser finished third at 24:05.9 and teammate Ashlyn Hoffman was fourth at 24:06.0. Mallory Heimbach placed fifth at 25:04.4. Tanzania Seibel was sixth at 26:19.3.
On the boys side, Hughesville beat Midd-West, 15-47. Midd-West defeated Montoursville, 20-42. The Mustangs topped Warrior Run, 15-49.
The Spartans topped Montoursville, 19-44, and Hughesville beat the Defenders, 15-50. The Warriors beat Warrior Run, 16-20.
Hughesville had five runners in the top six as Wyatt Laubacher placed first with a time of 17:54.0. Midd-West’s Grant Boop was seventh with a mark of 21:14.8.
VOLLEYBALL
Mustangs sweep Indians, 3-0
MIDDLEBURG — Midd-West volleyball opened their season with a sweep over Juniata, 25-23, 25-20, 25-19.
For Juniata, Maddie Copeland had eight assists and six digs.
Willow Aurand posted nine digs for the Indians.
JV Midd-West also won, 25-16, 25-12.
