BOYS SOCCER
Pats hold off Huskies, 5-4
LEWISBERRY — Mifflin County boys soccer fell just short in a tight battle with Red Land on Wednesday, 5-4.
The Patriots outshot MC, 12-7. They also had more corners, 4-3.
Goalie Jack Suydam had seven saves for the Huskies and the Pats tallied three.
Mifflin County assistant coach Todd R. Peters said, “This was a match that showed what heart and fight can do for our young men. We are so very proud of the effort of our Huskies squad. We went down 3-1 at half in this match. Eight minutes into the match we gave up a rebound tap in to Zucchero. Five minutes later a tap foul gave them a penalty to go up 2-0, scored by Buckwalter. Connor Donovan stayed persistent in his work and connected on a volley that was partially deflected and got us back in it with 10:18 left in the first half. Then, unfortunately another rebound tap in by Conrad made it 3-1 at the half…”
Peters continued, “We discussed what was on and available and what we were doing well that could continue to be successful while at half and then the boys did that work. Kayden Hook scored two goals in a minute when he put in a rebound from a Drake Gill shot and then he put a shot in from deep to get us back in the match with 31:22 left at 3-3. Kayden Hook flat out got dialed in. Devita scored for them on a quick combination play shot with 25:55 left that deflated us a bit. Both teams battled in through the midfield, some inconsistency was presenting itself when called or not, but our boys continued to work and fight. We traded goals with them late with around 5 minutes to go. Powers for them deposited a nice goal low and Benfer played Zach Keller in on a great run and he made sure to finish it with no doubt about it for the 5-4 final. Jack with his big saves and distribution, and our back line of D Rho, Wolfkill, Callen and Chase stepped and won balls for us to go at them again. The mids and forwards worked their tails off to pressure and get us back in it. We will use this going forward, but again we are immensely proud of our boys for tonight and want that attitude of heart and fight they displayed to be evident on and off the field in everything they do.”
The JV Pats beat MC, 1-0.
