PORT ROYAL — Port Royal Speedway hosts the 59th annual Tuscarora 50 for the sprint
cars tonight with $59,000 going to the winner. It’s one of the crown
jewels of sprint car racing. The total purse is $174,800. Officials
have moved the start time up with cars scheduled to hit the track now
at 4:45.
Fayetteville’s Lance Dewease has the most race wins. Those wins have
been in five different cars.
A total of 31 drivers have won the race at least one time and over
half of those drivers are in the Sprint Car Hall of Fame. The last
eight races have seen eight different winners and seven drivers
winning their first Tuscarora 50. Oklahoma City’s Ryan Timms upset the
field last year becoming the youngest T50 winner at age 19.
Timms continued his winning ways Thursday night as he inherited the
lead after Chase Dietz’s right rear tire blew and then controlled the
final three laps winning the High Limit Sprint Car Series feature. He
earned $10,000 for the win. Justin Peck, Aaron Reutzel, Rico Abreu and
17th starter Doug Hammaker completed the top five. Giovanni Scelzi,
22nd starter Justin Whittall, Kerry Madsen, Troy Wagaman Jr., and
Tanner Holmes rounded out the top 10.Ryan Smith had the fastest lap in
qualifying time trials with a lap of 15.320. A total of 50 cars were
in the pit area.
Chris Dolan won the Pennsylvania (305) Sprint Series feature. Tyler
Erdley, Cole Dewease, Braeden Varner and Jarrett Cavalet completed the
top five. Doug Dodson, Dustin Young, Chris Meleason, Croix Beasom and
Ken Duke Jr. rounded out the top 10. Kenny Heffner earned the 305
sprint car track championship.
