LEWISTOWN - Palmyra didn't need the entire night to decide this one. One half was enough.
Palmyra controlled the midfield, owned much of the possession and found openings behind the Mifflin County defense with through balls Monday, scoring three times in the opening half of a 3-0 girls soccer victory.
The Cougars pushed the game into the Mifflin County end almost from the start. The Cougars recycled the ball through midfield until space opened, then looked forward.
Three times, that pressure ended on the scoreboard.
Leah Blouch struck first with 26:14 remaining in the opening half. Summer Loew followed at the 16:55 mark, and Samantha Seager made it 3-0 with 3:56 left before halftime.
The goals came far enough apart for Mifflin County to regroup between them. Each time, Palmyra took control again.
The Cougars' control of midfield made that possible. They controlled possession and used through balls to attack the space behind the Huskies' defense. Mifflin County spent long stretches absorbing that pressure and struggled to build attacks of its own.
The numbers reflected the difference.
Palmyra held an 11-2 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. Mifflin County goalkeeper Taryn Hubler made 11 saves and kept the Cougars from adding to their lead after halftime.
Her workload told much of the story.
Palmyra continued to make Hubler work, but the Cougars couldn't add another goal after halftime. Mifflin County held Palmyra scoreless after the break, keeping the final margin at three.
The scoreless second half gave Mifflin County something to take from a difficult night.
They couldn't erase the three-goal deficit, but they prevented Palmyra from adding to it.
Palmyra goalkeeper Skylinn Gingrich made two saves in the shutout. The Huskies didn't earn a corner and rarely sustained enough possession to pressure the Cougars' defense.
The Cougars won the ball in midfield, kept possession and looked for passes into space behind the defense. The three goals came over a span of more than 22 minutes, evidence of pressure that kept returning.
Blouch started it, Loew added another and Seager sent Palmyra to halftime with a three-goal cushion.
After that, the match changed.
Palmyra entered the second half protecting a three-goal lead, while Mifflin County needed three to draw even. The Huskies prevented any more damage, but their two shots weren't enough to threaten Palmyra's lead.
The loss dropped Mifflin County to 0-10-1 overall and 0-7 in the Mid-Penn Keystone. Palmyra improved to 6-4-1 and 5-1 in conference play.
For Mifflin County, the difference was made before halftime.
