LEWISTOWN -- Lower Dauphin needed less than a minute Tuesday night to put Mifflin County in trouble, then spent the next 79 making sure the Huskies never found a way out.
A Lower Dauphin steal near the top of Mifflin County's penalty area led to Ethan Amici's goal just 38 seconds into the match, and the Falcons added two more before halftime on the way to a 4-0 Mid-Penn Keystone victory.
The loss dropped Mifflin County to 1-5-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the Keystone. Lower Dauphin improved to 5-1-2 and 4-1-1.
For Mifflin County coach Keith Yoder, the opening sequence hurt even more because it was exactly the start the Huskies had discussed avoiding. Mifflin County tried to play the ball back near the top of its own 18, lost possession, and Lower Dauphin punished the mistake almost immediately.
"You can't do that against a good team," Yoder said.
The Huskies had talked before the match about getting through the first five to 10 minutes without conceding, giving themselves time to settle against one of the stronger teams in the division. Instead, Lower Dauphin had the lead before either side had much chance to settle at all.
That mistake gave the Falcons more than a goal. It gave them the kind of match they wanted. With an early lead, Lower Dauphin repeatedly found room over Mifflin County's outside backs and down into the corners.
Joe Soriano made it 2-0 at 27:52, finishing a chance set up by Gavin Hess. Rowan Angstadt followed at 22:43, with Hess collecting his second assist of the half. By halftime, Mifflin County had managed little sustained possession and rarely forced Lower Dauphin goalkeeper Eljay Snavely into action.
Yoder said the Falcons were effective at getting balls over the outside backs, carrying play toward the corners and sending crosses into the penalty area. Mifflin County had trouble dealing with that pressure throughout the first half.
Lower Dauphin finished with a 12-3 advantage in shots and a 2-0 edge in corner kicks. Snavely made two saves for the Falcons. Mifflin County goalkeeper Jack Suydam stopped six shots and prevented the margin from becoming larger.
Mifflin County found something useful after halftime.
Yoder changed formations at halftime, and the Huskies defended with more success. Lower Dauphin still controlled much of the game, but it no longer found the same openings it had exploited during the first 40 minutes.
The Falcons' only second-half goal came on a set piece. Jack Donaldson scored off a corner kick at 33:09 with Brice Heplinger credited with the assist.
"I thought that went a little bit better for us in the second half," Yoder said of the formation change.
That was what Yoder took from a difficult night. Mifflin County didn't solve its offensive problems. The Huskies managed only three shots, two of which required saves from Snavely. But after allowing three first-half goals, the Huskies limited the Falcons to one after halftime, and that one came from a corner rather than the open-play pressure that had caused so many problems early.
Yoder said the Huskies still need practice in the new formation, particularly with positioning. Still, he called the second half the positive takeaway.
For Mifflin County, the next step is carrying those better stretches through more of the 80 minutes. Lower Dauphin showed Tuesday how quickly one early mistake can reshape a match.
Mifflin County faces East Pennsboro next, its final game before completing the first trip through the Keystone schedule. After that, the Huskies will have seen every division opponent once.
Yoder hopes that familiarity will help Mifflin County become more competitive when the Huskies face those teams again, particularly against opponents they played close the first time through.

By then, Lower Dauphin had already done the damage.
