MILL HALL — Mifflin County made the trip up to Malinak Stadium to take on Central Mountain for Friday night football action. The Huskies won the season opener, 28-19.
Mifflin County found themselves ahead at the half, 14-6, largely because of the big running plays from Jaxon Strohecker and Zyhair Hill with Strohecker leading the way with 64 yards while Hill ran with success totaling 42 yards.
The mighty ‘Cats drew first blood on a Kole Corman two-yard score. The extra point would be blocked by Nate Lindley to keep the score 6-0.
Kyle Everett would go 4-for-6 with 54 passing yards in the first half.
Huskies coach Shane Breon said, “We're a young team and still have room to grow. We handled adversity tonight and you always wonder how the kids will handle that. We knew it was going to be a dog fight. We have a lot of things to clean up. We were just trying to go fast in the huddle and we need to clean up some pre-snap penalties.”
Everett had 102 total yards on the ground despite the loss. Noah Wolfkiel connected with Asher Pearce for an 81-yard score, making it Huskies 21, Wildcats 6.
Mifflin County fought back to start the second half as Landon Bowen would take one to the house on a 90-yard kick return touchdown to extend the lead. The purple and white held a 28-13 lead at that point.
“We are a great team, I trust in our guys. We are young,but we have a lot of playmakers all around this team to help contribute and that is truly what makes us a great team,” Bowen said.
Lucas Hartung would also have a touchdown in the game with the Huskies using separation to their advantage to get past the Cats on their home turf. Hartung snagged the ball out of the air for a 13-yard score.
Mifflin County will be back on the road next Friday to battle Shippensburg.
