Huskies clash with Indians during football scrimmage

LEWISTOWN -- Mifflin County's football team hosted a scrimmage with Juniata as both teams earned postseason berths a season ago.
It’s a new age of football with both squads being young and inexperienced with lots of growth to be shown with just a week to go until the Huskies and Indians open up their respective seasons.
Mifflin County got a lot of production from both older players and younger players. Second-year varsity player Zahir Hill showed his explosiveness both on the ground and in the passing game during Saturday’s scrimmage at Donald M. Chapman III Stadium.
Mifflin County has talent and that was on hand primarily on the defensive of the ball where they brought back Jaren Kenny, being that primary playmaker along with Lucas Hartung. Kenny had a 33-yard scoop and score on Saturday.
Hartung was just one of many players who joined the big play spotlight on Saturday. Brayan Aurand, Chris Ritter, Asher Pearce and Cohen Leister showed out the most on offense by setting them up big ahead of Friday night's season opener.
Huskies coach Shane Breon said, "We have some young talent and we have some talented kids on the team. But we're trying to figure out our schemes around them and get plays. We are coming along although we have a big test coming up next week against Central Mountain. I know they are hungry but they have a really good coach and you can tell how hard they work when we went up against them during a seven-on-seven and they were a lot more aggressive."
Breon emphasized how bringing back key players on defense could benefit the Huskies with an inexperienced offense.
Juniata got strong showings from Jackson Condo, Quentin Houtz, Nick Burkin and Xzavier Rivera as all of them contributed in different ways as they find ways to get past Selinsgrove on Aug. 28.
Juniata coach Kurt Condo said, "It’s so hard to base things off a scrimmage. We came into this looking for certain things and we were able to get a lot of players on the field. We are just trying to find out who the players really are. You know it’s somewhat like vanilla. You are just trying to get the base stuff done with, just have to watch film. I was really pleased with the effort from many of our guys today and some of the playmakers did make some plays but we just have to clean some things up before it’s time to play Selinsgrove."
Mifflin County will open its season at Central Mountain on Friday. Mifflin County shut out the Wildcats, 42-0, at Donald M. Chapman III Stadium last season. Mifflin County last opened their season at Central Mountain in 2024 where they beat the 'Cats 42-6.
Juniata will open its season at Selinsgrove, where the Indians beat the Seals 18-7 at home a season ago.
