PORT ROYAL — About one month after his first career 410 sprint car
win, Doug Hammaker was back in Port Royal Speedway’s victory lane Saturday night.
Hammaker, of Grantville, took the lead from Nash Ely, and drove off
scoring his second win in the last three Port Royal sprint car
features earning $5,000 driving the Sandy Kline-owned No. 22.
Hammaker was tracking Ely down when a yellow slowed the race with only five laps left.
“We were going to win it or put in through the Geedy’s towing sign,”
Hammaker said about racing for the win after the restart.
“That’s the best I’ve felt,” Hammaker said. “My crew has me really
comfortable right now. I can’t believe I’ve won two.”
“I seen he was starting to struggle getting off the corners,” Hammaker said. “I pulled my wing back a little more on the restart. My motor takes off really good on the starts. He tried to block the slider line, so I had to keep my momentum on the top.”
Hammaker is fourth in points, but only 150 behind first.
“This sport is tough,” he said. “We’re racing against guys that do
this for a living. I have to thank Sandy. She spends her money on this
because she really loves it. It’s very rewarding for me to win for
her.”
The initial start was slowed when Mark Smith stopped. Derek Hauck
jumped Jason Shultz’s tire on the second attempt in turn one resulting in a flip. He was okay. Shultz continued.
Ely was fast off the pole of the 25-lap feature grabbing the lead.
Hammaker started sixth, but was racing quickly to the front. As Ely began lapping slower cars, Hammaker passed Devin Adams for
second. Shultz also passed Adams taking third.
Two lapped cars racing in front of the leaders bunched things up. Shultz, Logan Wagner and Lance Dewease raced hard for a top five spot. With 10 laps to go, the top five were all within a few car lengths of each other on a very fast racing surface.
A caution slowed the pace with five laps to go. Hammaker went after the lead in turns one and two. Ely got back by off turn two. They swapped again in the third and fourth turns.
Hammaker continued putting the pressure on as they raced close and clean for the lead. Hammaker secured the top spot as they raced into turn three.
“Nash raced me clean,” Hammaker said. “He could have taken me out down here or in one and two, and he didn’t. Hats off to him.”
“It’s fun when you’re winning races; it sucks when you suck,” Hammaker said. “We’re winning right now and hopefully more to come.”
From there, he pulled away eventually winning by 2.391 over Ely.
“I’m very happy,” Ely said. “It’s been a rough start to the year. I
wish it would have been one spot better, but we’ll get there. We’ll
consider this a win.”
Wagner won a great race for third with Shultz and Dewease completing the top five. Justin Whittall, who started 17th, Brock Zearfoss, Buddy Schwiebinz, 22nd starter Austin Bishop and Mike Thompson rounded out the top 10.
Ely, Hauck and Dewease won heat races for the 27 cars. J.T. Ferry won the consolation race.
Josh Spicer won the 20-lap feature for the Pennsylvania Sprint Series 305s.
Dylan Shatzer took the lead from Dustin Young early in the race.
Spicer grabbed the lead on lap seven after starting eighth. Colby Weaver, Shatzer, Young and Zach Rhodes completed the top five.
Doug Dodson, 22nd starter Cole Dewease, Tyler Schell, Kenny Heffner and Tyler Brehm rounded out the top 10.
Weaver, Jason Roush, Dodson and Spicer won heat races for the 46-car field. Dewease and Jarrett Cavalet won the consolation races.
Ryan Zook was cruising to victory in the 20-lap limited late model
feature when all hell broke loose. He led by 3.8 seconds when the
yellow flew with two to go when second place D.J. Myers slowed.
Zook, of Mifflintown, was looking at the checkers when a backstretch
crash stopped the finish. All drivers were okay.
On the restart, Gunnar Walls and Zook swapped the lead in three and four. They were side-by-side on the frontstretch. Walls got into Zook resulting in a hard crash for both drivers as they crossed the finish line. Many others became involved as well. All drivers were OK.
Zook, Walls, Spike Moore, Lane Snook and Kyle Lee completed the top five. Dillan Stake, Jaxton Garman, Jared Fulkroad, Nathan Long, and Casey Steinhoff rounded out the top 10.
Snook, Zook and Moore won heat races for the 23 cars.
