Pitching prevails in Springs’ 5-1 win

BURNHAM — If you like Babe Ruth baseball and like pitching, the place to be would have been in Burnham on Sunday evening.
Beaver Springs and Burnham squared off in a pitching duel with Springs coming out on top 5-1. Beaver Springs now holds the top spot in the Mifflin County Babe Ruth League with a 7-1 record. Burnham is in third place with a 5-2 mark.
The Springs’ Haven Bridge was the key man on the mound as he pitched into the sixth inning. He gave up just one run on one hit. He walked three and struck out 14. Colton Aumiller came in and got the final five outs, all on strikeouts.
Burnham got a good pitching performance from Noah Wray, who gave up three runs on three hits in five innings of work. He walked no one and struck out 10. Liam Shaffer worked the sixth and gave up two runs on two hits and struck out three. Cohen Leister had a 1-2-3 seventh with two strikeouts.
Burnham scored its only run in the first as Shaffer was hit by a pitch and got to third on two walks. He scored on an overthrow by Springs.
Beaver Springs also got on the scoreboard early as Max Trawitz walked and Bridge hit a ball just over the center field fence for a two-run homer in the first.
Leading 2-0, Springs scored a run in the fifth frame as Dale Davidson reached on an error, advanced on a single from Ean Walter and scored on another Burnham miscue.
In the sixth, Trawitz singled to right field and came home on two more Burnham errors.
After one out, Aumiller walked, stole second and scored on a Maverick Smith single making it 5-1.
