Smith, Shepps make their mark on Day 1

SHIPPENSBURG — Day 1 of the track and field PIAA Championships in Shippensburg produced results that some area athletes may never forget.

On Friday at Seth Grove Stadium, Mifflin County’s Carter Smith was back to his winning ways as he earned gold in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:01.54 (Class 3A), making him a repeat champion in the event.

“We will be looking to Carter (Smith), of course. Carter is a pretty big leader, a lot of the kids follow his lead in the way that he has changed his lifestyle to suit his sport, and they’re doing the same,” said Mifflin County head coach Tamara Sechler in a previous interview.

In the 110-meter hurdles (2A), Juniata’s Jasper Shepps ran 14.92 seconds, good for seventh place. Shepps also finished 10th in the 300-meter hurdles and ran the event in 40.60 seconds. He qualified for the final in the 300 hurdles.

Shepps also finished first in the high jump with a jump of 6′ 5″.

Juniata’s Wyatt Stroup finished 10th in the 1600-meter run (Class 2A) with a time of 4:19.18.

East Juniata’s Cody Nipple placed 15th in the 400-meter dash (2A) at 50.60 seconds. Nipple also finished 22nd in the 200-meter dash at 23.51 seconds.

Mt. Union’s Cailyn Skopic ran a 48.56 and placed 21st in the girls Class 2A 300-meter hurdles.

In 3A, Mifflin County boys recorded 20 points on Day 1 as did Manheim Township, Central Bucks East and Gateway.

Grove City tallied 21 points, good for third place. Palmyra finished in second with 28 points and State College was in first place at 53 points.

In 2A, Juniata boys had five points and were in 41st place. Quaker Valley had 75 points with a first-place finish.
