LEWISTOWN — In all the years that Mifflin County has sent teams to the PIAA track and field state championships, it has never won a relay race.
That was until Saturday.
The team of Reese Cubbison, Connor Lynch, Wyatt Kauffman and Carter Smith combined for a 7:42.46.
The top ten teams were all schools from large metro areas, Haverford, Lower Merion, Carlisle, JP McCaskey (Lancaster), Plymouth Whitemarsh, North Penn, Perkiomen Valley, Council Rock North and Unionville. With the exception of JP McCaskey and Carlisle, all the teams were from the Philadelphia region.
These same four runners won the distance medley for Mifflin County at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia in April.
In the 1970s all three schools, Chief Logan, Lewistown and Kishacoquillas had relay teams that placed in the state meet, but never came up a winner.
One thing that this team had was a closer like Carter Smith. But on a relay team, Smith can’t do it by himself.
The other three runners, Reese Cubbison, Wyatt Kauffman and Connor Lynch are all great runners themselves. All three of them have contributed to the Mifflin County team in other individual events.
On a relay team, every runner must work together passing the baton and running the best race of their careers. Especially in the PIAA state meet.
Cubbison, Lynch, Kauffman and Smith will now go down as the first relay team to win a PIAA state championship for Mifflin County.
