ALTOONA — The second day of the District 6 Track and Field Championships for the 3A class and the 2A class athletes at Mansion Park resumed on Wednesday after Tuesday’s preliminaries.
In team points, the Mifflin County boys finished in fourth place with 106 points and the girls finished in sixth with 35 points. Juniata High boys ended up in seventh place with 17 points. The meet had to take time for two lightning evacuations and reset the tents, getting regrouped at about 7 pm on Wednesday.
The Huskies got off to a great start on Wednesday with the boys 4×800 relay team setting a meet record of 7:43.37 to move on to the PIAA Championships at Shippensburg. Reese Cubbison, Conner Lynch, Wyatt Kauffman and Carter Smith make up the team that set the meet and school record.
The Huskies’ Reece Bell also advanced by winning the javelin competition with a throw of 184-08, Jack Suydam placed second at 159-07. Wyatt Kauffman won his final district title for the Huskies in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.87, while Cubbison ran third in the 3,200 at 9:20.83 to qualify for the state meet.
The Huskies had several notable performances at the meet with only first place and state quilter standard performances moving forward to the state meet. Tylor Kenepp had second place in the 400-meter dash at 59.06 and a sixth in the 200-meter dash at 26.49. Jovie Kauffman had a fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.52. Trevan Diven placed third in the 400-meter dash at 51.36. Winston Yetter ran seventh in the 400-meter hurdles at 53.85. Landon Yetter had a time of 45.03 to place seventh in the 300-meter hurdles. Conner Lynch placed eighth in the 800 with a time of 2:00.27. Camryn Treaster ran a 2:00.30 in the 800-meter run for a fifth place. Nevin Farley placed fifth in the long jump at 20-8. Dekker Pietzsch had fifth place in the discus throw at 122-4.

Also, Kendall Cavanaugh placed fourth in the javelin throw at 98-4. The 4×100 team of Jovie Kauffman, Brynn Rowe, Khloe Stitt, and Alleigh Caruso placed seventh at 54.87. The 4×400 team of Jovie Kauffman, Alleigh Caruso, Maddy Clinard and Taylor Kauffman placed fifth at 4:21.47. In the 4×400 boys relay Trevan Diven, Winston Yetter, Camryn Treaster and Conner Lynch placed sixth at 3:40.38. In the 4x 800 relay Amilia Coffey, Ava Kratzer, Liberty Cook and Lizzy Massie placed fourth at 10:48.05.
“I am very proud of every single athlete on this team,” stated Huskies head coach Tamara Sechler. “All the hard work in their training paid off when mattered most is very rewarding. The boys in the distance events led by Alex Monroe had very strong performances, showcasing the running talent of Mifflin County. We will be represented in every distance and the 4 x 800 at the state meet. Reece Bell has approached the javelin throwing event with purpose and increasing his distance. We will focus on small things and be prepares to end the season with podium performances at the state meet.”
Juniata’s Jasper Shepps set a meet record and the school record in the 110 hurdles at 14.16 to take top honors and advance to Shippensburg. Shepps backed it up with a first in the 300 hurdles with a meet record and school record of 38.53 to advance. Shepps was not finished yet as he set his third meet record and school record in the high jump at 6-10.25.
The Indians 4×800 relay team of Joel Hardin, Kade Wagner, Jackson Shellenberger and John Randolph ran a season best 9:12.68. Carolyn Heidenreich ran a season-best 800-meter run at 2:35.43. Aubryn Deihl had a personal best in the 800-meter run at 2:40.60. David Mayall-marker dropped 25 seconds of his time to have a personal best of 10:45.44 in the 800-meter run. Arthur Hazard and Alex Armstrong with jumps of 38-8 and 41-0. Sylvia Brubaker had a triple jump of 32-11.25.
“After a long rain and lightning delay, it was great to watch the kids have great performances. Most of them are competing in their last event of the season and some their careers.” commented Juniata head coach Shari Miller. “I am very excited for Jasper to walk away with three records. I am looking forward to watching him compete at Shippensburg next week It will be his last meet of his high school career.”

“The 4×800 boys relay team and Vada Banks had a tough time with the two-hour rain delay, commented Trojans head coach Casey Hanlon. “Overall, I am proud of the athletes that made it to districts. They performed above their rankings with personal bests. The other athletes competed at the level they were ranked at. We will have to start to rebuild to replace the seniors that are leaving the program.”
The PIAA Track and Field Championships will be held in Shippensburg on Friday, May 22 and Saturday, May 23, starting at 9 a.m.
