Miscues costly to Huskies in loss to Wildcats

LEWISTOWN — As finales go, this one by the Mifflin County Huskies was forgettable.

The Huskies, winners of the Mid Penn’s Commonwealth Division and freshly anointed top seed for the District 6 Class 6A Baseball Tournament, made three costly errors and five Mifflin County hurlers combined to walk eight batters in a 6-3 non-conference loss to Central Mountain at Capouillez Field on Tuesday afternoon, in Lewistown.

The Wildcats (13-4) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Darius Shade singled on a line drive to left, and, one batter later, Austin Frank reached on an error when shortstop Karl Shirely booted his ground ball. Huskies starter Parker Crownover then walked the bases loaded. Central Mountain’s Yafran Sanchez then reached on another error as Mifflin County third baseman Lincoln Ruble misplayed the ground ball. Frank and Shade both raced home on the play.

The Wildcats widened the gap to 3-0 in the third as Blake Walker doubled and scored on a single by Watt Probst.

Mifflin County (13-6) got a run on the scoreboard in the fifth as Ezra Beamer walked with two outs, advanced to second when Chase Hartung walked and scampered home on a single by Joel Beamer.

Central Mountain added two insurance runs in the sixth as Shade was hit by a pitch and Luke Nonemaker, Austin Frank and Hayes Miller all walked to load the bases. Shade came home when Mifflin County’s Austin McKnight uncorked a wild pitch. That made it, 4-1.

One batter later, Felix Oquendo walked to force in Camden Fuller, a pinch-runner for Nonemaker.

The Wildcats made it 6-1 in the seventh as Nolan Karstetter singled and scored on another Mifflin County error.

The Huskies rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Ezra Beamer walked and Hartung singled. After Joel Beamer was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Ezra Beamer scored on a wild pitch. Hartung advanced to third on the play and came home when Liam Shaffer flew out.

Mifflin County couldn’t get any closer as Luke Shawver grounded out to end the ballgame. Both teams finished with six hits. Probst was the only repeat hitter for either side. Ezra Beamer scored twice for the Huskies as did Shade for the Wildcats.

Crownover suffered the loss, not allowing any earned runs and a hit and a walk in two innings. Dane Hanna earned the win, going five innings, striking out two and walking three.

Line Mountain keeps EJ winless

HERNDON — A big fifth inning where the Line Mountain Eagles scored six runs proved to be the difference as the East Juniata Tigers remained winless after an 11-1 Tri-Valley League loss. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule.

The Tigers (0-18, 0-16 TVL) managed a hit and committed four errors in the field. Trailing 3-0, East Juniata scored its only run in the fourth as Ian Druckenmiller was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Owen Messimer.

Preston Derk earned the win for Line Mountain (7-9 TVL). The righty gave up one hit and one run (zero earned) over five innings, striking out nine and walking one. Kelton Bonnell took the loss for the Tigers, pitching 3 2/3 innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on three hits, striking out five and walking three.

Gavin Dunn and Henry Malfara each collected two hits for Line Mountain Varsity Eagles, while Everett Harris and Malfara each drove in three runs.

Midd-West squeaks past Selinsgrove

BEAVER SPRINGS — Max Trawitz drove in four runs on three hits to lead the Midd-West Mustangs past Selinsgrove 9-8 on Monday at West Snyder Elementary School in Pennsylvania Heartland Athletic League crossover action. Trawitz tripled in the third inning, scoring two runs, and singled in the sixth inning, scoring two.

Midd-West (8-10) rallied for the victory despite trailing 7-3 in the fifth. The Mustangs jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the third inning after Colton Aumiller singled, scoring one run, and Trawitz tripled, scoring two runs.

Selinsgrove (7-11) flipped the game in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs on four hits to take the lead, 6-3.

Midd-West answered in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs on two hits to take the lead, 9-8. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Trawitz that drove in two.

Derek Wert earned the win for Midd-West. The right-hander gave up three hits and one run over one and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking two. River Knepp started but surrendered five hits and seven runs over five innings, striking out six and walking three. Aumiller collected the save.

Midd-West travels to Mifflinburg on Wednesday.
