CRESSON — No. 1 Mifflin County baseball (12-6) played against No. 2 seed Altoona (10-11) in the 2026 district title game. After a loss last year, Mifflin County got revenge and won the game, 6-1.
Leadoff hitter Tanner Stroup sent the first swing of the game over the fence giving Altoona a 1-0 lead after one batter. But after that senior pitcher Chase Hartung played lights out by throwing all seven innings, giving up one earned run, and tallied seven strikeouts. Both Karl Shirey and Chase Leister had two RBIs and were two of the main reasons Mifflin County pulled out the win.
Mifflin County head coach Ray Hoppel won his second Commonwealth and his fourth district championship.
“The kids deserve it. They’ve worked hard all season. They have overcome adversity on many occasions and have come through with flying colors each time. It’s not easy to win our league and they proved their resilience by doing that. Today’s win was another goal we can cross off. We played very well. Our next goal is to make the state playoffs so that will be something we will be working at in practice over the next few days,” Hoppel noted.
Altoona’s season came to a close with a 10-12 record. As for the Huskies, they improved to 13-6 after a 1-3 start and play Tuesday against McDowell.
