Local flavor at Juniata College

HUNTINGDON — Spring sports have wrapped up at Juniata College. While none of the Eagles’ teams achieved much in the name of fanfare, the efforts of local standouts certainly made a difference on the playing fields.
On the diamond, Mifflin County product Landen Eichhorn finished his sophomore season for the Eagles. The right-hander from Belleville posted a 2-5 record with one save in 13 appearances. In 28 2/3 innings pitched, Eichhorn has a 6.91 earned run average, 1.40 WHIP and 16 strikeouts.
Eichhorn had two stellar moments, pitching 6 2/3 innings on March 31 in an 11-4 win over Susquehanna. He picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits, striking out three.
On March 21, he went 5 1/3 innings for his other win in a 7-6 victory over Scranton. He scattered four hits and didn’t allow a run and fanned two as the Eagles rallied for a comeback win.
Juniata finished the season at 13-27, including 4-20 in the Landmark Conference.
SOFTBALL
Chelsea Williams (Mount Union Area High School/Mount Union) saw action in 18 games for the Juniata College softball team. A junior outfielder, Williams batted .194 (7 for 36) with two RBIs and six runs scored.
She drove in runs in a 4-2 win at Shenandoah on Feb. 28 and an 11-0 decision over Curry on March 10. Her seven hits this season were the first of her college career. During her freshman and sophomore seasons, Williams had four at-bats each season but went hitless.
Juniata ended up 16-24 overall, including a 4-12 showing in the Landmark Conference.
TRACK AND FIELD
A handful of local products took to the track and field for Juniata College. On the men’s side, CJ Coffey (Mifflin County High School/Burnham) competed in the distance races, while Waylon Ehrenzeller (Juniata High School/Mifflintown) excelled in the jumps.
Coffey led the Eagles in the 5000-meter race at the Millersville Metrics on April 3, with a fifth-place finish in 16:15.83.
On April 11, Coffey did the same at the three-day Messiah University Invitational, turning in a sixth-place showing with a 15:56.01.
On April 17 at the Shippensburg University Mid-Week PR Bonanza, Coffey placed seventh in the 1,500 meters in 4:25.42. Juniata followed that up with a dominating performance in the 1,500 when the Eagles hosted the Juniata Tune-Up on April 25. The Eagles swept four of the top five spots, including top honors by Coffey in 4:20.31. In the field events, Ehrenzeller placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 11.54 marks.
At the Landmark Championships on May 3, which were hosted by Juniata, Coffey turned in a 16:03.04 in the 5,000 meters. Moravian captured the team title with 221 points, followed by Susquehanna (184.5) and Catholic (164), while Juniata’s 36.5 points secured a fifth-place finish in the eight-team field.
On the women’s side, Chloe Sauer (Midd-West High School/Middleburg) wrapped up her third season at Juniata as did Justice Sheaffer (Mifflin County/Lewistown). Both competed in the throws. Former Juniata High School product Haley Mummah (Mifflintown) completed her first-year with the Eagles in the jumps and throws.
On April 3, Sheaffer recorded a personal-best throw of 30.34 meters in the hammer at the Millersville Metrics. At the Messiah University Invitational on April 11, Sheaffer threw 27.22 meters in the javelin, 25.30 meters in the discus and 29.97 meters in the hammer, while Sauer posted a 28.55-meter mark in the discus and placed eighth in the hammer with a 39.89.
The Juniata women were dominant at the SU Mid-Week PR Bonanza hosted by Shippensburg on April 17. In the javelin, Sheaffer placed 12th in 91-11 and Mummah 13th in 89-11.
On April 25 at the Juniata Tune-Up, the Eagles delivered another dominating performance, capturing the team title with 209 points. In the field events, Mummah placed second in the high jump with a mark of 1.42 meters. In the throws, Sauer won the shot put with a throw of 10.54 meters.
On May 3 at the Landmark Championships, Juniata placed sixth, highlighted by Mummah added points in the high jump with an eighth-place finish at 1.43m, a personal best. In the throws, Sheaffer contributed with an eighth-place finish in the javelin at 30.98m, a personal best. Sauer also competed in the discus (28.76m) and hammer (35.86m).
Scranton captured the team title with 196 points, followed by Moravian and Catholic, while Juniata’s 45.83 points secured a sixth-place finish in the eight-team field.
In the coaching ranks, former Juniata High product Barrett Walters (Juniata/Mifflintown) served as an assistant coach, overseeing the throwers. He competed for the Eagles for four years in the hammer throw, weight throw, discus throw, shot put and the javelin throw.
LACROSSE
Vann Rogers (Mifflin County/McVeytown) completed his first-year suiting up for the Eagles this spring. Rogers saw action in 13 games for Juniata, notching one goal and four shots on goal.
The goal came on Feb. 28 during a 10-9 loss at Pitt-Bradford in overtime. Rogers had three shots on goal in the contest.
Juniata went 1-15, including 0-9 in the Landmark Conference. The Eagles’ lone victory came at Bethany (W.Va.), a 22-7 decision on March 4.
On the women’s side, two former Mifflin County Huskies took to the field for Juniata. Mikayla Bodley (Mifflin County/Lewistown) played at Juniata during her junior year after transferring from Bloomsburg University, while Mara Gallo (Mifflin County/Lewistown) was a first-year player.
Bodley played in two games for the Eagles, including making one start. A defender and goaltender, she allowed 11 goals and stopped eight shots.
Gallo saw action in 16 games and ended the season with nine goals scored and 11 points. She registered points in five outings:
Two assists in a 23-8 win over Lycoming on April 15. She also had a shot on goal.
Two goals in a 17-9 loss to Susquehanna on April 8. Gallo had three shots on goal.
One goal in a 17-8 loss to Elizabethtown on March 25.
Two goals in a 19-6 win over Wilkes on March 21. She ended up with three shots on goal and five shots overall.
Four goals on four shots on goal in a 22-2 win over Bryn Mawr on March 11. Gallo had five shots in the game.
The Eagles went 4-12 overall, including 3-6 in the Landmark Conference.
