Kennedy tosses no-hitter as Juniata tops Greenwood

MILLERSTOWN — The Juniata Indians rolled into Millerstown on Saturday to face a Greenwood Wildcat club looking to wrap up the Tri-Valley League West crown. Juniata pitcher Daylyn Kennedy was hearing none of that talk.

Kennedy tossed a complete-game no-hitter, striking out eight and walking none, as the Indians notched a 3-0 victory in TVL action. Those eight Ks put him second among league leaders for the TVL, ranking second to the 59 by Newport’s Landon Zaring.

Kennedy also helped himself offensively, smacking two hits — a double and a triple — driving in two runs, scoring another and drawing a walk in his three at-bats.

Juniata (6-8, 5-7 TVL) broke open a pitchers’ duel between Kennedy and Greenwood’s Titan Wirth by posting a three-spot in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, the Indians’ Drew Geedey walked and Brady Hack singled on a bunt to put runners at the corners. Kennedy then tripled on a line drive to center to plate both runners. Kennedy later stole home to cap the scoring against the Wildcats (11-8, 9-6 TVL).

Kennedy faced 23 batters — two over the minimum. In the fifth, Kennedy hit Greenwood’s Gavin Oburn but promptly picked him off first base to end the inning.

Juniata also made a pair of errors in the field. In the sixth, the Wildcats’ Owen Losch reached on an error by Indians second baseman Jack Greenholt but was left stranded. In the seventh, Greenwood’s Dylan Yohn hit a hard ground ball and reached on an error by the Indians’ Caleb Auker, but Kennedy retired the following three batters to end the ballgame.

Kennedy struck out five straight, fanning the side in the second inning and the first two batters he faced in the third.

Juniata managed six hits off Wirth, a tough-luck loser, who struck out five and walked four. Hack had two of the hits and scored a run, while Hayden Burd and Quentin Houtz accounted for the other two.

The Indians travel to East Division-leading Halifax on Tuesday.

Juniata shines at Stan Morgan Invitational

CARLISLE — The Juniata Indians sent a select group of athletes to the 37th Annual Stan Morgan Invitational on Saturday, and despite dropping temperatures and increasing wind throughout the day, several walked away with personal bests against one of the toughest fields they will see all season.

“It got colder and more windy as the day went on. Not the best weather for jumpers or throwers,” Juniata head coach Shari Miller said. “This caused some of the kids to not perform as well as they had hoped. It was an honor to be accepted into this invitational. They will take the experience they gained by having great competition and use it to their benefit for future meets.”

On the girls side, freshman Sylvia Brubaker led the way with two top-five finishes, placing fourth in the long jump at 15-2 and earning fifth in the triple jump with a personal-best 33-7. Madison Copeland added a ninth-place finish in the high jump at 4-5 and placed 21st in the triple jump at 28-7½.

On the track, Emme Freed competed in three events, taking 19th in the 100 hurdles (19.55), 13th in the 300 hurdles (55.18) and helping the 4×100 relay to a fifth-place finish. The relay of Freed, Sara Montoya, Aubryn Deihl and Willow Aurand ran 57.3 for a personal best.

Montoya also placed 15th in the 300 hurdles (56.66). Aurand finished 10th in the freshman 300 hurdles (56.05). Deihl added a personal-best 2:44.43 in the 800 to place 22nd.

Carolyn Heidenreich also ran 6:02.06 for 21st in the 1600, and Aubryn Diehl placed 15th in the javelin at 78-4.

Anthony Maradiaga delivered Juniata’s top boys finish, clearing 13-0 in the pole vault to earn third place and a medal while setting a personal best. “I was excited for Anthony for his third-place medal finish,” Miller said. “Anthony has been working hard to achieve a 13-foot jump in the pole vault.”

Josiah Barner added a personal best in the 800, placing 15th in 2:07.29. Joel Hardin ran 5:01.71 for 22nd in the 1600.

In the jumps, Alex Armstrong placed sixth in the high jump (5-9), 12th in the long jump (18-3¾) and 14th in the triple jump (38-9½). Arthur Hazard finished 16th in the long jump (17-11¼) and eighth in the triple jump (39-5).

In the throws, Sammy Spriggle placed 19th in the shot put (38-1) and 27th in the javelin (118-10).

Miller said she was proud of the athletes who battled the conditions and still found ways to improve. “It was great to see some were able to walk away with personal bests,” she said.
