Huskies hold off Hollidaysburg

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Every time the Mifflin County Huskies manufactured some runs, Hollidaysburg had an answer. Leading by a slim 4-3 margin in the top of the seventh inning, Mifflin County posted a two-spot which proved to be the difference on Thursday afternoon.
Piper Specht’s two-run home run in the seventh gave the Huskies some breathing room in a 6-4 opening round victory in the District 6 Class 5A softball playoffs. The Huskies (4-15) now face Central Mountain on May 20.
Mifflin County got on the board in the top of the second inning after Macy Pietzsch singled down the right field line, and Mya Felmlee grounded out, each scoring one run.
Genevieve Peacock singled down the right field line, which helped Hollidaysburg tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third.
Mifflin County took the lead back in the top of the fifth as Carly Dickson singled, scoring two runs, to give the Huskies a 4-2 lead. Then came Specht’s long ball — a home run to center field on the sixth pitch of the at-bat.
Addisyn Velez earned the win for Mifflin County. The pitcher allowed nine hits and four runs over seven innings, striking out five and walking one. Mikaylah Vincent took the loss for Hollidaysburg Varsity Tigers. The starting pitcher went five innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on six hits, striking out one and walking two.
Dickson and Specht were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for Mifflin County. Dickson and Ava Baker each collected two hits for the Huskies. Mifflin County didn’t commit a single error in the field. Baker had the most chances in the field with five.
Vincent, Peacock and Maggie Hicks each collected two hits for Hollidaysburg Varsity Tigers. Peacock led Hollidaysburg Varsity Tigers with three RBIs.
