Huskies can’t control Beavers’ bats in play-in loss

DUBOIS — Tuesday’s loss to the DuBois Beavers epitomized the softball season for the Mifflin County Huskies.

All spring, the Huskies either got a stellar pitching performance and their bats went cold, or they piled up runs and couldn’t get the big out when they needed it. Despite the inconsistency, Mifflin County still found itself within striking distance of the PIAA playoffs.

But despite leading by as many as four runs, the Huskies fell to DuBois 10-7 in a Class 5A play-in game at Heindl Field.

Macy Pietzsch collected three hits in four at-bats in the loss for the Huskies (5-16). She doubled in the third inning and singled in both the second and fifth.

Mifflin County struck first in the opening inning when a wild pitch brought home a run.

DuBois answered in the bottom half when Brielle Gray grounded into a fielder’s choice to tie the game at 1-1.

The Huskies responded with a four-run second inning to take a 5-1 lead. Lexi Trutt singled home a run, Bailey Wyland lifted a sacrifice fly, and Ava Baker doubled to drive in two more.

But DuBois immediately turned the momentum, scoring five runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-5 lead. The biggest blow was a two-run single by Presleigh Evock.

A DuBois error helped Mifflin County tie the game at 6-6 in the top of the third, but the Beavers answered again. A double by Addison Lilja put DuBois ahead for good, 8-6, in the bottom of the inning.

Abby Kalgren earned the win for DuBois, allowing 11 hits and seven runs (five earned) over seven innings. She struck out three and walked one.

Addisyn Velez took the loss for Mifflin County. She went six innings, giving up 10 runs (nine earned) on 16 hits. She did not record a strikeout or a walk.

Mifflin County finished with 11 hits. Baker drove the middle of the lineup, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Pietzsch also had three hits, while Trutt added two.

DuBois pounded out 16 hits. Lilja set the tone at the top of the order, going 4-for-4. Stasija Daniluk, Elliette Brewer and Kalgren each collected multiple hits.

Starting at $2.99/week.
