Gravel dominates Outlaws race at Williams Grove
MECHANICSBURG — David Gravel passed Kasey Kahne on the opening lap and dominated the Morgan Cup for the World of Outlaws sprint cars Saturday night at Williams Grove Speedway.
Gravel, a native of Watertown, Conn., earned $20,000 for his 10th career Grove victory. The victory also takes the Morgan Cup trophy back to Outlaws headquarters in North Carolina. Gravel led all 30 laps.
“I got a great start and was able to get by him,” Gravel said. “That was the winning move, but you never know how these races are going to go. It’s hard to win these races. No matter where it is. It’s great to get another win here at Williams Grove.
It was his 125th career Outlaws win. The two-time series champion extended his point lead as well.
“I didn’t think we’d get to race today, but I’m glad we did,” Gravel said, referring to rain earlier in the day.
Port Royal champion Justin Whittall finished second — his career best with the Outlaws.
“We’ve been working hard to get this new car to work,” Whittall said. “I saw David was struggling with the lapped car. I kept sailing the top and getting closer. It was a great race.”
Also scoring his career-best Outlaws finish was Grove point leader and defending champion Troy Wagaman Jr. in third.
“It was cool to get up to their speed and race with them.” Wagaman said.
Kahne, who picked up the Friday night win, started on the pole with Gravel second. Kahne led into the first turn, but Gravel went around the cushion and into the lead off the second turn.
Gravel’s lead was two seconds when he started lapping slower traffic with eight laps completed. Wagaman and Sheldon Haudenschild raced hard for fourth.
Whittall passed Kahne for second in turn four with 10 laps to go.
Wagaman and Haudenschild passed him as well. Whittall was slowly closing on Gravel over the final 10 laps. The final margin of victory was a half-second.
Haudenschild and Kahne completed the top five. Carson Macedo, Freddie Rahmer, Ashton Torgerson, Danny Dietrich and Bill Balog rounded out the top 10.
Gravel set quick time over the 40-car field with a lap of 16.421. Justin Whittall was fastest in the second group at 16.997. Gravel, Kahne, Whittall and Chad Trout won heat races. Kahne won the dash over Gravel. Daryn Pittman won the Last Chance Showdown.
Kahne, the 2000 Williams Grove Opening Day winner, has wins and championships with the Outlaws as a car owner, but Friday night was his first as a driver. He was subbing for Anthony Macri in the 39M.
Macri continues to recover from a broken back. Adding to the meaningful win, Joe Mooney, crew chief on the 39M, worked for Kahne for four seasons before leaving to work for Macri Motorsports.
“I can’t believe it,” Kahne said. “A few weeks ago, I was building my own cars, preparing to race later this year. Joe is exceptional on the wrenches. He’s done a great job with Anthony. This is a really good team. This car is super fun to drive. It’s so fun to win a race, but it’s tough.”
Kahne held off multiple challenges from Sheldon Haudenschild for the win. Gravel, Chase Dietz and Wagaman completed the top five. Buddy Kofoid, Daryn Pittman, Macedo, Balog, and Donny Schatz rounded out the top 10 Friday night.
