LEXINGTON, Ky. –Kylee Cubbison is exactly where she wanted to be.

One year after coming within a single round of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., the Mifflin County graduate and Bowling Green State University senior has earned another opportunity — advancing to today’s final round of the 1,500 meters at the NCAA East First Round held at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.

And with it, a shot at Eugene.

Cubbison secured her place in the decisive round Thursday night at the University of Kentucky Track and Field Facility, navigating a tightly packed field to finish in 4:16.97. The time, just over a second off her school record, was more than enough to push her through and extend her senior season.

It was a race that demanded composure from the start.

Through the opening laps, the field remained bunched, with runners fighting for position in the kind of tactical setting that defines championship 1,500-meter racing. Cubbison stayed patient, holding her ground and avoiding trouble as the pace began to build.

When the bell rang for the final lap, she delivered.

Drawing on the late-race strength that has defined her career, Cubbison surged down the stretch, fending off a wave of challengers to secure one of the qualifying spots. In a race where fractions of a second often separate those who advance from those who fall short, her finishing kick once again proved decisive.

It was a familiar script — and one she has spent years perfecting.

Now a three-time Mid-American Conference champion in the 1,500 meters, Cubbison has built her résumé on thriving in exactly these moments. Earlier this month, she captured her third conference title by unleashing a powerful closing lap, reinforcing her reputation as one of the league’s most reliable closers.

That same approach carried her through Thursday’s opening round.

But for Cubbison, reaching Saturday’s final carries added meaning.

Last spring, she reached the same stage at the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Fla., battling through a storm-delayed opening round to advance before falling short of the NCAA Championships. She left knowing how close she had come — and with the determination to return.

That experience has shaped her senior season. She has raced with greater control, sharpened her finishing speed and leaned on the confidence that comes from winning under pressure.

Now, she has another chance to turn that experience into a breakthrough.

Today’s final will determine which 12 runners from the East Region — paired with 12 more from the West — advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., scheduled for June 10-13. It is one of the most demanding rounds in collegiate track, where strategy, positioning and one well-timed move can make the difference between extending a season and bringing it to a close.

Cubbison enters that moment with both experience and momentum.

Her performance also highlighted Bowling Green’s opening night of competition as several teammates had shining moments as well. But Thursday night belonged to Cubbison — and the opportunity now in front of her.

With one race standing between her and a trip to the sport’s biggest collegiate stage, the margin for error will only shrink. The pace will be faster, the field tighter, and the stakes higher than ever.

For a runner who has built her career on patience, grit and a powerful finishing kick, it is exactly the moment she has been chasing.

One more race.

One more chance to finish what she started — and run her way to Eugene.

Starting at $2.99/week.
