Record day by Shepps powers Indians to Invite title
SHIPPENSBURG — The next time an entourage from Juniata High School visits Shippensburg, they hope it will be for this year’s PIAA Track and Field Championships.
Call Saturday’s 99th Roddick High School Invitational, held at Shippensburg University, a warmup — a teaser for the upcoming state championship event.
Call it whatever you want, but the trio of Jasper Shepps, Anthony Maradiaga and Carolyn Heidenreich put their talents on display on this particular day. Shepps and Maradiaga’s performances even powered the Indians to the Class AA boys team title.
Shepps competed in three events on the day and started things off by dominating the high jump. He took top honors by breaking the school record for the third time this year after clearing 6-10.
Shepps then came back to place third in the 110-meter hurdles, breaking his own school record for the second time this year after turning in a 14.49. Shepps’ last event of the day was the 300 hurdles, where he scored another victory with another school-record time of 38.89.
Maradiaga competed in the pole vault, where he placed 13th overall, matching his personal-best jump of 12-0.
On the girls side, Heidenreich ran the 1,600 in a time of 5:57.19.
Juniata head coach Shari Miller said, “I am proud of how all three competed in their events today. Carolyn and Anthony had a good day. It was great to see Jasper be able to break all three of his school records.”
The Indians host East Juniata and Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy on Wednesday.
SOFTBALL
Wagner, Midd-West
double up Troy
MIDDLEBURG — After losing to Troy the last time they met, Midd-West demonstrated that turnabout is fair play. The Mustangs walked away with an 8-4 non-conference win over the Trojans on Saturday.
Midd-West’s Emma Wagner was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up four earned runs off six hits. She has been consistent: she hasn’t given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter’s box, going 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs.
Wagner wasn’t the only one making solid contact for the Mustangs (7-3) as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Briahna Keister, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.
Midd-West visits Shamokin Area at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
BASEBALL
Lewisburg
scorches Indians
LEWISBURG — Lincoln Ayres went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs as Lewisburg routed Juniata 14-4 in non-league action on Saturday. The game was called after six innings due to the 10-run rule.
Juniata (1-8) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Daylyn Kennedy and Quentin Houtz both singled. Kennedy stole third and scored on a fly ball by Caleb Auker. After Carson Nipple singled, Houtz scored on a wild pitch and eventually Nipple stole home.
The Indians had trouble keeping up with Lewisburg after that. The Green Dragons took the lead with a four-spot in the bottom of the frame as Landen Walker walked and later scored on a bases-loaded walk and Cole Grozier smacked a three-run double.
Lewisburg added to its early lead, scoring in every inning by the fourth. Ayres hit an RBI double in the second and later scored on a passed ball.
Lewisburg added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning when an error scored one run, Wagner doubled, scoring two runs, and Ayres singled, scoring another run.
Landynn Bieber earned the win for Lewisburg. The starter gave up six hits and four runs over six innings, striking out 10 and walking two. Drew Geedey took the loss for Juniata, going one-third of an inning, allowing four runs on no hits, striking out none and walking three.
Auker accounted for the Indians only RBI, while Nipple went 2-for-3 at the plate. Kennedy, Houtz, Geedey and Bryce Harlon also had hits. Kennedy and Nipple each stole three bases for Juniata as the Indians racked up seven for the game.
Juniata travel to Southern Huntingdon today.
