MIFFLINTOWN — East Juniata errors aided a 15-2 Juniata win in five innings Friday in a matchup of the two area softball squads. Juniata’s Sophia Smith starred, going 2-for-4 with a double, a single and an RBI.

“It’s really refreshing to get out there and get a win,” Smith said. “We had a rough start to the season, and we all came together today and just rallied, it was really refreshing for the whole team.”

Juniata scored three in the first inning to make it 3-1, and later broke things open in the second and third innings to go ahead 12-1. The Tiger fielders helped as well, with errors costing East Juniata with innings that could have been ended with much less damage.

“We threw the ball high a couple times from shortstop,” East Juniata coach Wes Diehl said. “I got girls that can make those throws that didn’t make those throws. My first baseman is young, she is a freshman. My original first baseman is catching right now because my original catcher has a concussion.”

Madison Snyder was the pitcher for the Tigers. She made up for some of the runs allowed on defense when she was at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with a double and an RBI.

Hitting was also tough to come by against Brown for the Tigers. “I told my girls to focus on some specific stuff,” Diehl said. “I tell them you gotta get your butt down, you gotta bend your knees, get your butt down, you gotta get your eyes closer to that ball so you can connect with it.”

Juniata looked pleased after their win with many of their hitters having good stats. Ashley Piper went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Destiny Yohn went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Hope Kehler was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Julia Martin was 2-for-3 with a triple.

“I’m in a little better mood today,” Juniata coach Craig Bubb piped. “We didn’t even hit yesterday in practice, and they came out today and did exactly the things we made adjustments yesterday when we talked to them.”

Kalynn Brown started in the circle for the Indians, allowing four hits with no earned runs. “Kay pitched great,” Bubb added. “She stayed ahead, we talked yesterday about the different batting averages in different counts. She did a great job of getting ahead of hitters and moving the ball around.”

Juniata (1-5) will play Lewisburg at home at 10 p.m. Saturday. East Juniata (1-4) is at Line Mountain at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

“Our division in the Tri-Valley league is wide open right now,” Bubb said. “I think every team in our division has a win. If we hit like that, we’ll hit with anybody. If we keep hitting like we did tonight we will be just fine.”
