Altoona falls in series finale to Sea Dogs

ALTOONA — It took the Altoona Curve more than two weeks to string together back-to-back Eastern League victories. Winning that third game in a row will now take a bit longer.

The Curve had their two-game winning streak snapped by visiting Portland on Sunday afternoon. Portland’s Hayden Mullins scattered two hits, struck out six and walked one over the first three innings as the Sea Dogs built a 5-0 lead and hung on for a 5-3 victory at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The Curve took two of six games in the series.

Mullins and Altoona’s Khristian Curtis breezed through the first three innings. Curtis ran into trouble in the fourth and didn’t retire a batter in the frame as he surrendered two runs on just one hit.

The Sea Dogs’ Marvin Alcantara singled and Nate Baez was hit by a pitch before Curtis was replaced by Tyrone Yulie. Miguel Bleis and Ronald Rosario then smacked back-to-back singles to score Alcantara and Baez to give Portland (8-6) a 2-0 lead.

After Bleis scored on a wild pitch by Yulie, Rosario came home on a sacrifice fly. After Tyler McDonough walked and Altoona (2-13) made another pitching change, Max Ferguson’s single scored McDonough for a 5-0 lead.

Bleis had a pair of hits for the Sea Dogs, while four different players drove in runs.

Altoona’s offense came alive in the seventh as Shawn Ross belted his third home run of the season. Omar Alfonzo and Will Taylor scored on the blast. Mitch Jebb accounted for two of the Curve’s seven hits.

Altoona hosts division-leading Richmond on Tuesday.
