LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County (11-10) welcomed in Southern Huntingdon (17-5) for a nonconference matchup on Senior Night and the Huskies took the win, 48-43.
On Thursday, the Lady Huskies got off to a rapid start jumping out to an early 6-0 lead with two early triples from junior guard Payton Weaver.
The Lady Rockets would slowly cut into the lead but the effort to grab the lead was never really there for the talented Rockets as early turnovers proved costly. Weaver found herself with early opportunities putting together a 15-point effort in just the first half.
Huskies coach Crystal Weaver said, “Well most importantly we just have to stick together as a team. I keep on preaching that to the girls just as long as we stick together good things will happen. So, we’re just going to hopefully carry this energy into tomorrow night with State College and do what we can do tomorrow night and look forward to next week and hope to keep coming out with a win.”
Southern Huntingdon kept it close throughout the game with two players finishing in double figures. The Lady Rockets got strong showings from Alle Young late in the second stanza and that would continue as Young would lead in scoring for the Rockets with a dozen points.
Mifflin County’s physicality played a big factor in deciding this game with strong showings on both ends of the floor with Jayda Kanagy getting into double figures with 10 and Weaver ending the night with seven to go along with a strong finish from Mackenzie Peachey ending the night with 18.8 seconds remaining after fouling out but would total eight points on the night.
Huskies’ Mackenzie Peachey said, “I think this win turned us around. We’ve been losing a little bit and got ourselves on a little losing streak but this one turned us around and hopefully we can carry this energy into tomorrow and continue to play physical and play as a team no matter win or lose.”
Mifflin County will have a quick turnaround as the Lady Huskies will be back in action again on Friday for another nonconference showdown against their cross-mountain rivals in State College (12-7).
