LEWISTOWN -- Mifflin County boys basketball clashed with Red Land at the Mifflin County High School where the energy was high in a packed gym and the home squad topped the Patriots, 71-54.
It was the Patriots who got things going on a Quinlin Shearer two-pointer to give Red Land an early advantage. It would be all Mifflin County from there as they would bust out to a 15-5 lead after one stanza.
The Huskies got 11 three-pointers and also got good performances all across the board in their win over Red Land. Zach Keller had 15 points and Carson Franklin added 13, with fellow junior guard Lucas Hartung adding 12. Junior Luke Bender also was in double figures with 11.
The JV Huskies dropped their game against the Patriots, falling 48-38. Sophomore Dylan Bonson led the way with 13.
Huskies coach Wade Curry said, "We will continue to focus on the things we talk about everyday in practice which is our defense and commitment to staying focused on the energy level we bring to the court. And that will be a primary focus tomorrow is just to continue that effort from tonight. Zach had a tremendous defensive effort and led us to scoring points. They have great players over there and our guys defended it very well but across the board we had guys coming in and out and gave us lifts off the bench. And that’s a sign of a good program. There was a point during the game where they brought it within 10. I thought our kids showed advancement in their maturity level and we made a couple key stops. We were patient on offense. It was a great win."
Mifflin County pulled out the stops when they needed to the most and when they were fouled they made their foul shots. Red Land did have two players in double figures in the loss as Shearer and Colton Rose had 16 points and a pair of triples.
Mifflin County held the Patriots in check defensively holding them to two three pointers and limited Red Land to easy twos and foul shots.
Husky Zach Keller said, "Our strengths tonight we’re on defense tonight. I thought collectively as a team we played well tonight we knocked down shots tonight and I think if we do that tomorrow against a good Lewisburg team we will be successful."
Mifflin County will play Lewisburg on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Huskies now move to 4-1 on the year and 1-1 in Mid-Penn play. Red Land drops to 2-3 and 1-1 in conference play.
