College Corner: Local products conclude seasons on gridiron
Parker Boop
HUNTINGDON – The Juniata College Eagles finished their season with a record of 2-8, including 0-6 in the Landmark Conference, after making big improvements overall on the gridiron.
A total of seven Eagles players received all-conference selections, the most the program has had since 2013. Four local products suited up for Juniata on this year’s roster:
Carter Sauer (Middleburg/Midd-West High School) played in 10 games for the Eagles as a senior, finishing with four tackles, including two solos and two assists. An offensive lineman, Sauer had solo tackles in losses at McDaniel College on Sept. 20 and College of New Jersey on Sept. 27. He added assists in losses to Moravian on Nov. 8 and Lycoming on Nov. 15. For his career, Sauer played in 36 games and made three tackles and three assists.
Makih Hunt (Port Royal, Juniata High School) played in five games for Juniata at tight end. A junior, Hunt caught five passes for 100 yards and one touchdown. His best game was Sept. 5 at Gettysburg, a 31-30 Juniata win, where he had four receptions for 48 yards and a score.
Naiym Francis (Mount Union/Mount Union Area High School) played in three games as a freshman. He recorded one catch for three yards in a 20-17 loss to Catholic University on Oct. 11.
Parker Boop (Middleburg/Midd-West) did not play in any games this season. A freshman, Boop was listed as a defensive lineman.
There were also half a dozen other local products who played college football this fall. Others included:

Trio at Mansfield for Sprint Football
The Mansfield Mountaineers celebrated a fairly successful season in sprint football, finishing 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the Collegiate Sprint Football League North. Sprint football is a popular East Coast sport for players who weigh no more than 179 pounds. Three local products played a role in that success:
Eli Swan (Mount Pleasant Mills/Midd-West) played in all eight games at wide receiver as a senior and caught 13 passes for 247 yards and one touchdown. His longest catch was 50 yards.
Caleb Smith (Mifflintown/Juniata) saw action in seven games on offense, defense and special teams as a freshman. At wide receiver, Smith ended the year with one catch, which went for 36 yards and a touchdown against Caldwell on Oct. 4. Defensively, as a defensive back, Smith had nine solo tackles and four assists. Three of those tackles came on No. 14 against Molloy.
