Cardinals drop Eagles, 20-17

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Chris Smith ran for the decisive touchdown in the fourth quarter and Catholic University’s defense intercepted Juniata College quarterback Ethan Eisenberg with 1:35 to play as the Cardinals came away with a 20-17 Landmark Conference victory on Saturday, in Washington, D.C.

The Eagles, who lost their fourth-straight game and fell to 2-4 on the season, pulled even at 7-7 early in the second quarter when Eisenberg scored on a 2-yard run.

Juniata took a 10-7 lead at the 10:09 mark of the third quarter when Alex Mullin booted a 16-yard field goal. The teams then traded scores to end the quarter as Andrew Tabor caught a 7-yard TD pass from Catholic quarterback Charles Gulbin and Alex Eaton scored on a 4-yard run for Juniata.

That 17-13 lead held up until Smith’s game-winning score with 8:04 to play.

Eisenberg went 13 of 24 for 104 yards and 1 interception, while Gilpin hit on 20 of 27 for 212 yards, 2 TDs and 1 interception. Smith rushed for 108 yards on 18 carries. Offensively, Catholic outgained Juniata in total yards, 384-269.

Mount Union product Naiym Francis had a 3-yard reception on Juniata’s opening drive of the game, which resulted in a punt. It was his first college catch.

Midd-West product Carter Sauer also played but did not have any statistics. Juniata’s Makih Hunt and Midd-West’s Parker Boop did not play, according to the game participation list.

Juniata (2-4, 0-2 Landmark) hosts Susquehanna on Saturday.

NO. 4 KUTZTOWN 34, LOCK HAVEN 7

KUTZTOWN – Four different Kutztown players rushed for touchdowns in the first half as the fourth-ranked Golden Bears grabbed a commanding 27-0 lead against Lock Haven in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division game and never looked back.

Judd Novak ran eight yards for the first TD of the game in the first quarter and Luke Maxwell followed five minutes later with a 1-yard run as Kutztown led 13-0.

Eli Cunningham scored on a 15-yard run and Steven Burkhardt added a 2-yard rush as the Golden Bears led 27-0 at the half.

Damir Green rushed for a 2-yard TD in the third quarter for the TD for the Bald Eagles (2-4, 1-2 PSAC East).

Offensively, Lock Haven QB Jackson Ostrowsky completed 23-of-37 passes for 168 yards, while Novak went 15 of 19 for 220 yards. Kutztown outgained Lock Haven by a 376-252 margin.

The Bald Eagles travel to Shippensburg on Saturday.

SHIPPENSBURG 41, MILLERSVILLE 28

SHIPPENSBURG – Shippensburg quarterback Riley Gunnels passed for 412 yards and four touchdowns as the Raiders held off winless Millersville in PSAC East action on Saturday.

The difference was the first half as the Raiders (2-4, 2-1 PSAC East) grabbed a 20-7 lead thanks to a 14-yard touchdown run by Ethan Arneson and a 35-yard TD pass from Gunnels to Marcus Sweeney. Wilson Ingerski also booted a pair of field goals.

The teams traded scores in the second half as Ty Neal hauled in an 86-yard scoring strike from Gunnels in the third quarter. In the fourth, Gunnels passed for two more scores – 14 yards to Caiden Pines and 27 yards to Landon Bailey.

Gunnels connected on 27-of-44 attempts, while Arneson topped the century mark with128 yards on 23 carries. Sweeney (122) and Neal (113) both topped 100 yards in receiving.

Shippensburg outgained Millersville 588-315 in total offense.

The Raiders host Lock Haven on Saturday.
