PORT ROYAL — The third round of Pennsylvania Sprint Car Speedweek got underway Wednesday night at Port Royal Speedway.
The 42-car field was split into two groups for qualifying time trials. Chase Dietz was fastest in the first group and overall at 15.859 just beating Ryan Smith’s time of 15.896. Justin Whittall, Jeff Halligan and Lucas Wolfe completed the top. Dietz earned $300.
Kyle Larson was fastest in the second group at 16.073. Brock Zearfoss, Anthony Macri, Lance Dewease and Kody Hartlaub completed the top five.
Whittall won the first heat race over a fast-closing Dietz. Wolfe, TJ Stutts and AJ Flick completed the top five.
Smith won the second heat over Devin Adams, Mike Walter, Cameron Smith and Austin Bishop.
Macri beat Larson in the third heat. Steve Buckwalter, Hartlaub, and Australian Ryan Newton completed the top five.
Dewease won the final heat over Logan Wagner, Danny Dietrich, Zearfoss and Mike Wagner.
Troy Wagaman Jr won the B-main.
Larson was scheduled to start on the pole and Macri second.
Speedweek officials announced that the entire point fund of $35,000 would be paid out despite the fact that three races were rained out. The champion gets $6,000.
The series moves to Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway tonight and then to Williams Grove Speedway tomorrow night for the $20,000 to win Mitch Smith Memorial. Port Royal hosts the Greg Hodnett Classic Saturday night now paying $20,000 to win, plus the super late models. The series concludes Sunday at Path Valley Speedway in Spring Run.
“We have the greatest fans in the country here in Central PA and they came out in force tonight,” said Speedweek organizer Alan Kreitzer.
The United Racing Club 360 sprints were also racing. Mark Smith, Port Royal Mayor Dylan Cisney and Buddy Schweibinz won the heats.
