Macri wins at Port Royal during Speedweek
PORT ROYAL – Anthony Macri came out on top of a chaotic Pennsylvania Sprint Car Speedweek feature Wednesday night at Port Royal Speedway.
Macri grabbed the lead from Kyle Larson in turns three and four on the opening lap and led all 30 laps scoring the $10,000 win – his third of the season at Port Royal, and ninth career Speedweek win. He also took the series point lead.
Macri blasted into the lead over Larson. The pair set a blistering pace and started lapping cars quickly.
The Dillsburg driver wasted no time with the slower cars and actually increased his lead. Larson was pushing hard to keep pace with the two-time and defending Speedweek champion.
With 12 laps to go, the race took a dramatic turn as Larson tapped the wall and spun in turn two.
Macri had lapped up to 12th spot, so Larson restarted there ahead of the lapped cars. Macri controlled the restart as Larson began a march back to the front.
The red flag flew with seven laps to go when Brock Zearfoss flipped in turn four. Macri, who had built a 4-second lead, spun to miss the wreck. Zearfoss was okay. Since he spun to avoid contact, under speedway rules, he was allowed to keep the lead.
Larson, meanwhile, had charged back up to seventh already. He blasted by Ryan Smith and Danny Dietrich on the restart.
Dietrich ran out of fuel and stopped on the backstretch one lap later. He quickly refueled and rejoined the field.
Larson passed Chase Dietz on the restart for third and then drove by Justin Whittalll for the runner-up spot with five laps to go.
Larson ducked under Macri for the lead, but several cars stopped on the track bringing out the yellow with four laps to go. At this point, the race was stopped so teams could refuel.
“I don’t know who was looking out for us there, but somebody was,” Macri said. “Spinning to avoid Brock and we were out of fuel. The yellow came out just in time. We were able to make some changes to the car as well under the red and just ran the sh*t out of it for four laps.”
Macri got a good restart and went unchallenged the final laps scoring the win over Larson and Dietz.
“My guys are working hard and they give me a great car, so it’s up to me not to screw it all up” Macri said. “We have a lot of racing to go, but I imagine this puts us in the point lead now.”
Larson, who runs a 33-gallon tank, was less than pleased about the fuel stop because he had enough to go the distance.
“I made too many mistakes,” Larson said. “Disappointed to give up track position like that, and then we set all these laps for guys with small fuel tanks and we have a big one, and we’ve never run out. The car was a hand-ful, but when I hit it right, it was really fast. This is definitely one of my favorite tracks. It’s been two or three years since I’ve been here. I love coming here.”
Smith and Logan Wagner completed the top five. AJ Flick, Lance Dewease, Dietrich, TJ Stutts, and Whittall rounded out the top 10.
The 42-car field was split into two groups for qualifying time trials. Dietz was fastest in the first group and overall at 15.859 just beating Smith’s time of 15.896. Whittall, Jeff Halligan and Lucas Wolfe completed the to five. Dietz earned $300.
Larson was fastest in the second group at 16.073. Zearfoss, Macri, Dewease and Kody Hartlaub completed the top five.
Whittall won the first heat race over a fast-closing Dietz. Wolfe, TJ Stutts and AJ Flick completed the top five.
Smith won the second heat over Devin Adams, Mike Walter, Cameron Smith and Austin Bishop.
Macri beat Larson in the third heat. Steve Buckwalter, Hartlaub, and Australian Ryan Newton completed the top five.
Dewease won the final heat over Logan Wagner, Dietrich, Zearfoss and Mike Wagner.
Troy Wagaman Jr won the B-main.
Dietz came back to win the United Racing Club 360-sprint car feature after starting sixth. He took the lead from Adam Carberry on lap four. Cody Fletcher, Logan Rumsey, Mark Smith and Carberry completed the top five.
KYLE LARSON WINS HAGERSTOWN
Kyle Larson scored his 11th career Speedweek win Thursday night at Hagerstown Speedway. Larson was a close second for most of the 30 laps, but Dietrich’s miscue with a slower car entering turn one was the opening Larson needed as he made the winning pass with three to go. His second career Hagerstown win (2020) was worth $10,000.
Dietrich, Lucas Wolfe, Anthony Macri, and Brock Zearfoss completed the top five. Troy Wagaman Jr., Justin Whittall, Cameron Smith, Freddie Rahmer and Brady Bacon rounded out the top 10.
Macri led Dietrich by 45 in the series standings heading into the $20,000 to win Mitch Smith Memorial Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway.
Macri gained more points as he set quick time over the 36-car field with a lap of 16.732.
Brent Marks, Dietrich, TJ Stutts, and Ryan Smith won the heat races.
Port Royal hosts the Greg Hodnett Classic tonight, which now pays $20,000 to win, plus the super late models. Racing starts at 7. The series concludes tomorrow night at Path Valley Speedway, Spring Run.
